KTN's online platform helps you to make the connections you need


The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from sustainability to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.


The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Knowledge Transfer Network is Innovate UK's innovation network partner, and also works with other funders to provide innovation networking services and fulfil our mission to drive UK growth.

AGGRI FP7 Rail seminar - presentations available

Brief summary of AGGRI FP7 Rail Seminar 1st July 2011

The Transport KTN supported the AGGRI FP7 rail seminar on 1st July 2011.  This event was a useful opportunity to:

A brief overview of some of the salient points from the afternoon is summarised below.  Note that this was a very information-rich afternoon, and this article can't hope to do justice to all the speakers or their content.  The presentations and a number of other documents referenced at the event can be accessed by logging in and viewing the documents in the document library/clicking the relevant links in this blog posting.  

Horizon2020 - the sequel to FP7

Some key points to note here:

·      Focus is on cross-sector work (i.e. not specific to road/rail/marine or aero) that holistically addresses the societal challenges.

·      Not looking for research for the sake of research – production of demonstrators is sought.

·      Additional support will be made available to make sure that research is turned into products, jobs and services, focusing on innovation and exploitation including developing patents and inter-EU collaborative knowledge sharing activities.

·      UK needs a single strong vision of what Transport prize to go for – currently has the equivalent of a “shopping list” depending on who shouts the loudest – ideas include suburban transport or high speed trains.

Successful proposals

·      UK has been successful in gaining funding – had projects in all 6 areas of rail efficiency and got 18% of the available budget (more than France, Italy or Germany).  Other countries see the UK as a good partner to involve with – we have developed a strategic approach to engaging with European research.

·      We actively engage in setting the research priorities and evaluating impacts - this means that we are properly aligned and aware of what is relevant.

·      €20m investment gives access to €80m knowledge. Participation is driven for right reasons – pursuing business objectives, capitalising on opportunities, growing the business.


All proposals get a 2-3 hour reading and discussion at the Commission

Successful projects score highly by including such areas as:

·      Innovation – is it genuinely fresh and new, rather than a re-work of something already around– this is the key one that experts really like

·      Describe the state of the art – don’t expect the reader to know everything that you do about current thinking and technology

·      Work on partnerships – especially current and long term plans for involvement with SMEs

·      Risk - what are you doing about it?  Do you have a plan b?

·      Exploitation and open-ness – what do you plan to do during/afterwards?  How/will you share beyond the consortium?  Remember, this is public money you’re bidding for and they like you to be open – consider going public e.g. a conference for stakeholders, setting up a website, establishing a knowledge exchange network….

European railway energy roadmap – towards 2030

Priorities include

·      Monitoring systems (timescale 2020)

·      Reuse of kinetic energy (timescale 2020)

·      Smart grids and the multiplication of energy sources (intelligent distribution and storage of energy comprising rolling stock, infrastructure etc with a potential interface to the public grid and the ability of timely balancing the energy flow) (timescale 2030)

·      Lighter trains 2015 – tech transfer from aero and auto

·      Lighter trains – weight reduction on urban and passenger trains

·      Hybrid traction – multiple power sources for traction

·      Energy Efficient Auxiliaries

·      Next gen of power semi conductor

·      Sector smart grids (seems to be unavoidable!)

·      Advanced traction energy supply

·      Infrastructure sections without catenary

·      Feeding kinetic energy to the public grid

·      Standardization of energy efficient driving

·      Traffic flow management

·      Parked trains management

·      Innovative propulsion – hydrogen energy, however this may not be as applicable to trains for the next 10-20 years.

ERRAC will run workshops on each of the areas of interest, open to everybody. ERRAC will distribute a template where you can see which companies are interested in each so there is a global view of who is interested in what.  Please submit your company name to ERRAC by September.
