A little more about Tony...

 Currently I am Network Director for the £7 million research Security of Supply Mineral Resources programme funded by NERC and EPSRC. The aim of this programme is to enhance the sustainability of the supply chain for some of the elements that perform important functions in energy technologies.

 I joined the ES-KTN team in May 2006 after 25 years in the metals and minerals industry. I have operational experience in most aspects of the production chain, from mineral extraction to by-product recovery and scrap recycling.

 

My previous role was Technical Director with Harsco, the world’s largest supplier of contract services to the metallurgical industry. I was responsible for the development and application of systems for managing by-products at plants worldwide.

After working on mining and metals production facilities in Africa for 6 years (Zimbabwe and Ghana)  I returned to the UK working on the production of ferro-alloys from scrap and then on the design and supply of mineral processing plants.

 

My current aim is to utilise my experience to support innovation in the resource sector which can contribute to sustainable development. I have contributed to the development of UK and EU policies through engagement in several consultation processes and I have conducted consultancy work for a number of clients.

 

I studied Metallurgy at the University of Swansea (a historic centre of the copper industry), the University of Pennsylvania and Imperial College (Royal School of Mines). Experience has taught me that to manage a process efficiently you need to understand it and the characteristics of the materials being treated. I believe that continuous improvement is not only a good idea – it is a necessity!

 

The broad range of interactions with business and government has taught me that innovation and knowledge management are vital to the long term success of organisations. I have a wide range of production and R&D experience focussed on the delivery of practical solutions and my aim now is to contribute to Sustainable Development worldwide.  I have a proven track record in winning business and delivering results. I have the ability to discover what the customer really wants and to create the level of trust required to secure the business. Strong ability to lead multidisciplinary teams effectively so that all stakeholders are satisfied including safety, health and environmental compliance.

 

 Throughout my career I have put myself into challenging situations. This has enabled me to acquire a broad range of innovation, production and R&D experience. I have developed an overview of many aspects of global business. The ability to see the ‘big picture’ - puts me in a strong position to identify and deliver projects that improve the sustainability of an organisation. I can work with and inspire teams to enhance resource efficiency, productivity, quality, environmental impact, safety and thus the overall performance of their programmes.
