The Detection & Identification of Infectious Agents: 3rd Series

The DIIA Innovation Platform aims to reduce the mortality, morbidity  and  economic burden of infectious agents in humans and animals.

There will be two competitions in the series:

Competition 1: Decentralised rapid diagnostics for human and bovine tuberculosis

Competition 2: Decentralised rapid diagnostics for endemic animal diseases

The word decentralised has been used to capture a wide variety of testing paradigms including point-of-care/point-of-sampling tests, and tests carried out in satellite labs and mobile units. The scope of these competitions will be presented at the meeting and delegates will be given an opportunity to request and attend 1:1 bio-partnering meetings.

Competition 1: Decentralised rapid diagnostics for human and bovine tuberculosis

The Department of Health (DH) prioritised a number of disease areas for the platform of which one is tuberculosis (TB). There has been a gradual rise in the number of TB cases observed in the UK over the last 20 years, with a 4.2% rise in 2009 equating to 9,040 cases diagnosed or 15 cases per 100,000 population. Whilst these numbers may not seem high, it is the trend and threat from multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) that is of particular concern.

The tests developed will be of value to the UK but it is anticipated that businesses will explore the market opportunities in resource poor settings where the prevalence of active TB is high, especially in the HIV positive population.

One of DIIA’s objectives was to bring the animal and human diagnostic communities closer together: to give them an opportunity to learn from one another, to be better prepared for the threat from zoonotic diseases and to develop technology platforms that are applicable to the detection of infectious agents in humans and animals. Following discussions with the BBSRC, Defra and others, DIIA’s TB call will include the detection of bovine TB.

Bovine TB is one of the biggest challenges facing the cattle farming industry, particularly in the west and south west of England. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis which can also infect and cause TB in badgers, deer, goats, pigs, camelids (llamas and alpacas), dogs and cats, as well as many other mammals. In the last 10 years it has cost the UK taxpayer approximately £500 million to control the disease in England. It has been estimated that it will cost £1 billion to control the disease over the next 10 years if further action isn’t taken. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are also investing in ways to reduce bovine TB.

Competition 2: Decentralised rapid diagnostics for endemic animal diseases

In March 2012 DIIA held a workshop with the dairy, beef, sheep, pig, poultry, aquaculture and equine industries to explore the opportunities and desire for point-of-sampling tests for endemic animal diseases. A significant number of opportunities were discussed that warrant further investigation by businesses, including the detection of fluke infections, differential diagnosis of mastitis in cattle, examination of broodstock and egg supplies in aquaculture, the detection of norovirus in shellfish and the diagnosis of equine strangles (Streptococcus equi) in horses. Along with potential co-funders DIIA has designed a competition that will address the opportunities and needs articulated in the workshops.
