IoT Cities Demonstrator Competition Briefing
IoT Cities demonstrator
The Internet of Things (IoT), where everyday objects are connected to networks enabling their data to be shared, is a major area of growth for the global economy. These technologies underpin ‘smart’ services that have a transformative effect on society, particularly in the urban environment, allowing cities better to meet the needs of citizens.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and Innovate UK are to invest up to £10 million in a single collaborative R&D project to encourage in-field innovation trials that demonstrate the capability of the Internet of Things (IoT) in a city-region. This is part of a wider £40m Government investment announced in March 2015. The ambition for this demonstrator is to show how a large scale deployment of IoT can offer compelling benefits to citizens’ lives through environmental improvements, economic opportunities, and the more efficient and effective delivery of services such as transport, healthcare and energy.
Projects must be Local Authority (LA) or Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP, or equivalent organisation outside of England)-led with the involvement of at least one of each. We expect strong collaboration with businesses.
At this half-day briefing event Innovate UK will explain in detail the scope and conditions of the competition. There will be discussion of example services. Participants will have an opportunity to network and hear how the Knowledge Transfer Network may assist in consortium formation. Materials from these events will subsequently be available online.
Applicants invited to interview will be given the opportunity to provide a written response to assessor feedback ahead of the panel interview. The interview panel will comprise industry and academic experts from the IoT, Smart Cities, Transport, Energy and Healthcare fields.
