Economist Technology Quarterly highlights role of technology in the future of agriculture

The Economist has recently published a “Technology Quarterly” report on The Future of Agriculture, looking at how technology could be used to make improvements in food production that will not just boost farmer’s profits, but may also help us feed the world without over-reaching our resources.

The report pays particular attention to precision/smart farming technologies and genomics. One example given is the use of GPS in modern tractors, which can prevent tractors covering the same ground twice (or indeed, missing out areas) and has been credited with reducing fuel bills by up to 40% and aiding the effective use of fertilisers and chemical sprays.
