The eco-efficiency of different manufacturing processes is determined by the efficiencies of the synthetic route and the manufacturing processes it entails. New synthetic routes are required which incorporate the maximum proportion of starting materials in the product (atom-efficiency) coupled with processes which minimise the energy expended and the waste produced.
The most appropriate technology may not be the most sustainable one; and a sustainable technology may have high cost or maintenance that make it unsuitable as an appropriate Smart technology.
