Possible sources of data for the 'Solving Urban Challenges with Data Competition

The list below may be of use to applicants using big data to solve urban challenges

  • Data Cards used at the events
  • Members of the Environmental Science to Service Partnership (ESSP*) will be making some publically funded environmental datasets available for the duration of projects, free of all charges. Data will be released under Open Government Licenses or in some cases innovation/research licenses.
  • The NERC Data Catalogue Service (http://data-search.nerc.ac.uk) provides a central point of access to search NERC’s data holdings and information products.
  • Sources of other environmental data can be found via the UK-Environmental Observation Framework catalogue (www.ukeof.org.uk)
  • data.gov.uk
  • The UK Data Service (http://ukdataservice.ac.uk/).
  • Information on the relevant ESRC data resources can be found at http://www.esrc.ac.uk/research/research-resources/index.aspx .
  • The Satellite Applications Catapult provides access to a huge resource of remotely sensed data from satellites. Much of this data is freely available via the European Space Agency, the European Commission or NASA, but expert advice can also be offered on commercial data sources. The Catapult can help with other satellite technologies, such as navigation or communications, which might be relevant to project proposals. http://data.satapps.org/
  • Ordnance survey http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/innovate/developers/data.html

It is not a requirement to include data from these sources. However, the availability of these datasets is a key feature of this competition.

* ESSP is a partnership between the Natural Environment Research Council (including British Geological Survey and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology), the Met Office, the Environment Agency, Ordnance Survey and Defra.
