On the 11th December Innovate UK in collaboration with the Knowledge Transfer Network, Natural Environment Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council hosted a briefing event in Cardiff to support the new competition 'Solving Urban Challenges with Data'.
The event was a great success, attended by industry, academia and local organisations interested in the funding opportunity. The day began with a presentation from James Taplin, Innovate UK who discussed the competition scope and application process. This was followed by a case study example of the successful use of merging datasets to solve challenges presented by Fran Bennett from MastodonC. Next we heard from the three competition funders on some of the types of data that is available to use in this competition, NERC, ESRC and Innovate UK Space.

Delegates were asked to provide information about what they are offering and what they are looking for from the competition. The facilitators used 'Give Get' cards to record this information. After the break delegates were asked to form groups to discuss possible ideas for the competition. The ideas from the Cardiff event were recorded on 'Urban challenge' cards and are posted below along with the Give Get cards

The day finished with presentations detailing some of the tools and services available to help consortium to submit proposals to the competition and an overview of the finer details of the competition from James Taplin i.e. costs and timescales.
