Sensors in Agriculture

Agricultural science is a fast growing market, but faces significant global challenges in the form of:

  • A rising population
  • Rapid development of emerging economies
  • Shortages of land, water and energy

To address these challenges, there will need to be significant improvements in the yield and sustainability of food crops and livestock. A key part of the developments, underpinning these improvements, will be the acquisition of data and the conversion of this data into information to enable the effective management of crops and animals and sensors can be a key tool to help with this.

This event acts as a follow-on to the Biosensors in Agriculture event which the KTN ran in June 2015. Subsequent to this, agriculture was identified as an area where significant benefit could be felt from a wider range of sensing technologies to help address the challenges. The aim of this workshop is to look at the sensing challenges in agriculture and to identify areas where:

  • Current sensor technologies can be applied
  • New sensor technologies are required

In particular, this event will focus on:

  • The major challenges in specific areas of agricultural science and technology
  • The contributions new sensors can make to address these challenges
  • The requirements of new sensors to address the sensing “gaps” in agriculture
  • How sensor-related projects can access upcoming funding calls e.g.
