Research Needs, Post-Fukushima

The aim of the group is to identify ways in which the UK’s RD&D community can support the efforts of the global nuclear community in addressing the issues raised by the event at the Fukushima Daiichi site.

The group is interested in the implications of the accident for the operation of existing reactors as well as for the design and construction of new reactors. The group will also discuss the decommissioning challenges faced at the Fukushima Daiichi site.

The first meeting of the group was held on the 21st September 2011 in Cheltenham. Information on this event can be downloaded from the ‘Documents’ section.

The HSE’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has a section on its website dedicated to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi site and its implications for the nuclear industry in the UK. On the website you can find the interim and final reports on the implications for the industry written by Mike Weightman, Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations and head of the ONR.

The TEPCO roadmap and Atomic Energy Commission of Japan's report provide details of the technology challenges and the forward plan for decommissioning.

The Investigation Committee on the Accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Stations has produced an interim report.

The KTN and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) are working together on finding out ways the UK can support the Fukushima Dai-ichi clean-up. If you feel there is some way which you can provide support, please use the "Contact Us" section on the Nuclear Group Homepage.

Members may also be interested in the EU executive training programme, which provides funding for business language training and internships in Japan.

For more details on the event itself, the US Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) has produced a detailed report.

The Prime Minister has agreed with his Japanese counterpart to hold an annual dialogue on nuclear issues, the details of the agreement can be found here.
