Highly robust ground platforms

Highly robust ground platforms

MOD's Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) proves the value of novel, high-risk, high-potential-benefit research sourced from the broadest possible range of science and technology providers, including academia and small companies, to enable development of cost-effective capability advantage for UK Armed Forces and national security.

This competition seeks novel technologies to create a small, simple, crewless sensor platform (vehicle) that can maintain capability after assault from the detonation of a buried charge.

£500,000 of funding is available for this Phase 1 competition, with a further £500,000 for Phase 2.

Specifically, the challenges are to identify and develop sensors and components that are inherently robust against blast and shock damage, and to design and build proof-of-concept demonstrators.

These must:

  • move under remote control
  • remotely control a camera
  • transmit the image information from the camera to a base station

The demonstrator must be optimised against assault from a buried charge. Each demonstrator will be tested by Dstl. This will involve being exposed, while active, to successively increasing buried charge detonation.

A further £500,000 will be available for a second phase which will develop either the most successful of these concepts, or an amalgamation of the best principles and features from all of them, into a very high survivability platform.

This competition will be briefed at the CDE Innovation Network event on Tuesday 13 January 2015 - registration is open at:
