Opportunity for companies: present a problem at the 2015 European Study Group, 23-27th March in Manchester.

Opportunity for companies: present a problem at the 2015 European Study Group, 23-27th March in Manchester.

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) wishes to support an organisation to participate in the 2015 European Study Group in Industrial Mathematics.   This mini competition has the aim of identifying appropriate candidate companies.  The closing date for applications is Sunday 15th February 2015 at midnight.

About Study Groups:

Study Groups are intensive weeklong workshops where industry-based engineers and scientists work alongside university-based mathematical and computational scientists on problems of direct industrial relevance. Around 8 companies present problems at the workshop. In return, they receive ideas, insights and results, which are captured at the end of the week in a short report.

The 2015 Study Group will take place at the Alan Turing Building at the University of Manchester during the week of 23-27th March 2015 and will be the 107th such Study Group that has been held in Europe since their inception in the late 1960s. For further information, see http://www.esgi.org.uk. This is a unique opportunity to bring fresh insight from a large multidisciplinary team to challenges of real importance to business.

NERC’s  support will cover:

• The fees that companies would normally pay to participate (usually £7,500).

• Advice in preparing challenges for presentation at the event.

• Coordinating work on the problem during the week

• Overseeing the capture of output in a final report

Note: Participating companies must be able to commit staff to attend most if not all of the event.

Scope:

We are interested to hear from companies, NGOs or public sector organisations, that face challenges related to Probability, Uncertainty and Risk for Natural Hazards. The challenges could relate to hazards modelling, mitigation planning, disaster recovery, risk management or policy making.

What you need to do:

If you are from a company and believe that you have a challenge meeting the above criteria,

email Dr Vera Hazelwood at vera.hazelwood@smithinst.co.uk with a description of your challenge, including background information and what you are aiming to achieve. One or two sides of A4 will be sufficient at this stage.  Please provide your contact details (name, email address and phone number in your application). NERC representatives will assess the applications and select the most suitable candidate. You can read more about PURE scope at www.pure-network.org
