Mathematical Modelling - Helping manufacturers save money

NPL's mathematical modelling capability is highlighted in  a two-page article in Metal Working Production (MWP) magazine.

The article highlights how NPL's mathematical modelling capability is helping manufacturers avoid mistakes and reduce costs by simulating the manufacturing process before a product is built.

NPL offer 10 day free secondment at MCERTS 2011

Companies developing sensors do not always have the necessary facilities to verify all aspects of their instrument performance. In order to be able to sell into certain markets it is essential to obtain the appropriate type-testing accreditation, which gives confidence to customers/legislators that the technology is fit for its intended purpose.

EmissionsThe National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has recently introduced a new Technology Innovation Fund (TIF) that can assist innovative enterprises to develop their technology.

As part of NPL's involvement at the forthcoming MCERTS conference (30 & 31 March 2011, Telford, Shropshire, UK), we will be offering companies the opportunity to win a 10-day TIF secondment to NPL to help them complete the development of their gas sensors prior to submission for type-testing.

A Spartan effort from NPL

In March 2010, NPL performed laboratory and field-based tests for UK wetsuit manufacturer, Spartan, to help further their knowledge of how wetsuits keep people warm.

A comment from Spartan's owner Mark Minter:

The independent, proven validation gives us tremendous professional credibility. It has also helped us understand more how wetsuits work with the body. The work with NPL enables us to make informed decisions about the most appropriate materials.”

That was brought home recently when Spartan was encouraged to make a wetsuit from a new, but more expensive fabric.

“We might have been tempted to go ahead, but we were able to test it at NPL and it just wasn’t warm enough. That data has saved us £100,000, as it would have taken a £179 suit to more than £300 and potentially even damaged our reputation. Our China factory was really impressed" says Minter.
