NATs call 2 - Advancing the development and application of NATs through collaborative research and development.

Innovate UK, the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of animals in Research (NC3Rs), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) have invested up to £6m in eight projects that will improve the discovery (early stages when active substances and their potential uses are identified) of new human and veterinary medicines, agrochemicals and chemicals and their assurance for effectiveness and safety as they are developed. The call builds on the feasibility study call launched in 2014.

Proposals had to be collaborative and led by a business and could range in size from total costs of £500,000 to £1m.

NATs call 1: Advancing the development and application of non-animal technologies

Innovate UK, the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) invested up to £4m in feasibility studies into how non-animal technologies can be further developed and applied to improve product development across a range of industries. 

Projects had to be collaborative feasibility studies (mainly pre-industrial research projects) and business-led. Business partners could attract up to 65% public funding of their project costs (75% for SMEs).
