Negative Emission Technologies are the deliberate manipulation of the environment to combat or counteract climate change. They are technologies which remove CO2 from the atmosphere in an attempt to avoid climate tipping points which would otherwise be triggered by the emissions that have already been produced.

The Environmental Sustainability KTN will be giving particular focus to the following key priorities;

  • Ocean Iron Fertilisation

Iron fertilization is the intentional introduction of iron to the upper ocean to stimulate a phytoplankton bloom. This is intended to enhance biological productivity, which can benefit the marine food chain and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

  • Air Capture

Air capture involves reacting atmospheric CO2 with various chemicals to trap it so that it can be safely sequestered. For example scrubbing towers – air is sucked up from the bottom of a tower through a mist of chemicals which react with the CO2 in the air to form more stable compounds (amine absorption, quicklime). Alternative air capture techniques include polymer membranes and algae based carbon sinks.

  • Bioenergy with CCS (BECCS)

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) utilises the growth of biomass (wood, algae, crops etc) to extract CO2 from the atmosphere and carbon capture and storage technologies to store it in deep geological formations.

  • Biochar

Biochar is the name given to charcoal when it is used for particular purpose i.e. soil enhancer. Biochar is created by the pyrolysis of biomass – burning in the absence of oxygen. The biochar is then incorporated into growing media and the carbon is sequestered into the soil.

  • Enhanced Weathering

Examples of land based enhanced weathering techniques are in-situ carbonation of silicates. Ocean based techniques involve alkalinity enhancement, such as dissolving limestone, silicates or calcium hydroxide into the seawater to address ocean acidification.

Due to the nascent state of these technologies there are many challenges that still need to be addressed including; technical capacity and scalability, controllability, side effects, energy requirement and cost. It is hoped that by raising awareness of the potential for NET in meeting the UK's carbon reduction targets future collaborations will solve these challenges and create new opportunities for the UK.
