MBE Community Challenge Themes and Sectors

 

 

The MBE Community sector-specific activities in the first three years of the programme have identified four broad Challenge Themes where an increase in the development and exploitation of innovation would create a positive business impact. Further consultations and activities have since identified specific topics which will form the underpinning knowledge building blocks and technical focus for the new programme.

This page provides an overall summary of all current Challenge Themes the MBE Communuty is currently focused on.

Climate Change Adaptation - is a broad area which has local, national and international dimensions that when considered together have major implications for the design, build and ongoing occupancy of buildings. The focus for the MBE Community will centre around those aspects which primarily influence the UK built environment, and better understanding practical adaptation measures in response to changes in temperature and precipitation patterns. Energy & Carbon Efficiency - is a topic which is at the heart of the zero carbon agenda, driven by the need to reduce carbon emissions as well as energy bills and the continued reliance of overseas energy supply. Life Extension and Retrofit - With the increased realisation that the UK has an aging infrastructure and building stock which has to be maintained rather than replaced.There are strong drivers (i.e the future legislative targets) to tackle performance improvement, both mechanical and functional. Process and Operational Efficiency - Low impact buildings must be run efficiently and operated well to deliver the targets set for them, and the impact of the industry itself will equally be reduced if its operations are cost effective. Read more ...
