What we do

This sub-group facilitates discussion around modelling of all solid materials on all length scales involved in all advanced engineering sectors and high-value manufacturing.

The length scales for modelling of materials include:

  • Micro-scale

    • Atomic and sub-atomic modelling from first principles to predict the effects of irradiation, temperature, dislocations etc on material properties

  • Meso-scale

    • Intermediate scale phenomena including crack initiation and growth, grain boundary segregation, precipitation, microstructure evolution, deformation mechanisms, etc.

  • Macro-scale

    • Continuum mechanics including finite element method

The materials involved can be broadly categorised as structural, electronic or functional.  The main classes of materials involved are:

  • Ceramics
  • Metallic systems and coatings
