What we do
This sub-group facilitates discussion around modelling of all solid materials on all length scales involved in all advanced engineering sectors and high-value manufacturing.
The length scales for modelling of materials include:
Atomic and sub-atomic modelling from first principles to predict the effects of irradiation, temperature, dislocations etc on material properties
Intermediate scale phenomena including crack initiation and growth, grain boundary segregation, precipitation, microstructure evolution, deformation mechanisms, etc.
Continuum mechanics including finite element method
The materials involved can be broadly categorised as structural, electronic or functional. The main classes of materials involved are:
- Metals and alloys
- Metallic systems and coatings
The advanced engineering sectors are:
- Power generation
- Oil and gas
