The sub-group for ‘Advanced Modelling of Materials' has been set up to provide a platform for ongoing discussion and up-to-date resources to stimulate knowledge transfer across the range of research disciplines, application areas, modelling methods and length scales involved in this field.

A key theme is ‘bridging the gaps' by stimulating discussion and transfer of best practice across the UK modelling community.

‘Modelling' is an essential tool for materials development in a range of engineering sectors including power generation, health care, defence, aerospace and transport.   Modelling can enable the performance of devices to be improved through developing a mechanistic understanding of the underpinning phenomena on the atomic length scale, through to mechanical analysis of full-scale structures on the macroscopic length scale.  Successful development and application of modelling will be essential for the UK to remain commercially competitive across a range of manufacturing sectors.
