What is Medical Biotechnology

For our purposes, medical biotechnology (MedBio) includes those organisations that are discovering or developing new therapeutics that achieve their principal action in or on the human body by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means, in addition to those who provide products and services in the wider supply chain. Biologic medicines, or biopharmaceuticals, include therapeutic proteins, DNA vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and fusion proteins. In addition the KTN's MedBio Group also works closely with the KTN's Regenerative Medicine Group in the area of ATMPs.  Advanced-therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) are medicines for human use that are based on genes or cells and include gene-therapy, somatic cell therapy, tissue-engineered medicines and combined ATMPS. With the advances of gene editing technologies and more research into the role of exosomes, this is a fast-paced and constantly evolving sector globally.
