Innovate UK publishes list of trials to be supported for the Integrated Transport Local Authority Solutions competition

Innovate UK has this month announced the winning proposals that have succeeded in the assessment stage of the Integrated transport local authority solutions competition - that accepted entries between January and March this year.

Subject to grant offer and conditions being met, four projects will be supported with, three selected from the dozen feasibility studies that were carried out in 2014 that were funded in the Feasibility stage of the Integrated transport local authority solutions competition, plus one for which the feasibility study was funded under the equivalent stage of Innovate UK’s earlier SBRI Future Cities solutions competition.

The total cost of the the four projects below as proposed is just over £11 million, with just under £7.5 million to be provided by Innovate UK.

It's previous Integrated transport - In-field solutions competition provided investments of just over £600,000 in twelve feasibility studies offering new approaches to dealing with traffic congestion through ‘integration’.

Integration was considered to offer efficiencies, such as by reducing capital cost and maintenance, or providing a self-functioning and self-monitoring transport system. Innovate UK envisaged successful implementations boosting local economies, increasing social inclusion and reducing the environmental impact of transport.

The overall aim was to encourage new ways of thinking, to deliver more efficient transportation.

These twelve projects were outlined earlier this year in the lead to the trials competition in feasibility studies are Integrated transport - In-field solutions competition 1 roundup.

 

Integrated transport trials to be funded

As outlined in a document dated 15 June, last updated on 7 August 2015, the successful projects are:

 

Mobility On-Demand Laboratory Environment (MODLE)

Esoterix Systems Ltd, a Bristol based software house opertating in the transport market, is to follow up last year’s Demand-based Urban Bus Integrated with Rail And Health (DUBIRAH) project in Bristol, that assessed the viability of developing and operating a commercially sustainable on-demand bus service, integrated with rail and health care services.

The three month DUBIRAH project, also involved collaborating partners First Great Western; North Bristol NHS Trust; and the University of West of England.

The consortium planned, ahead of that stage, to followup the feasibility project with funding to initiate the ‘zonal’ bus service for real in 2015.

Total proposed project costs of the MODLE trial are £2,121,564, with a proposed project grant of £1,492,825.

 


One Transport: A one M2M-based Open Ecosystem for Nationwide Transport Integration

A consortium of eleven partners have announced their participation in the oneTRANSPORT project, that will aim to enable multimodal transport information to be published by data owners (such transport authorities and third parties) that will be accessed by transport authorities, application developers and others.

oneTRANSPORT is claimed to be an open, standardised, marketplace solution for transport data, enabling companies to deliver services in the transport marketplace.

According to project leader InterDigital Europe, oneTRANSPORT is not a Urban Traffic Management Control (UTMC) replacement, but by operating at the Service Enablement level, it uses existing and new data assets to create markets in applications, analytics and service provision, so offering a ‘route to market growth’ for suppliers of ITS management solutions, and sensors and software.

The stated goal of oneTRANSPORT is to deliver improved travel experience as well as revenues for local authorities.

Using Internet of Things (IoT) technology targeted at transport authorities, the project’s budget is approximately £3.5 million, of which is £2.4 million is provided by Innovate UK. The project will span two years and intends to ‘lay the basis for smarter transport networks in the UK, as well as setting an example of the kind for transportation networks worldwide’.

In additional to InterDigital Europe, the consortium comprises: Arup, Buckinghamshire County Council, Clearview Traffic Group, Hertfordshire County Council, Highways England, Imperial College London, Northamptonshire County Council, Oxfordshire County Council, Traak Systems Ltd and World Sensing.

InterDigital is a US company that develops technologies for mobile devices, networks, and services. Its London-based research unit recently announced its involvement in three current Horizon 2020 projects: XHAUL, POINT (iP Over IcN the betTer IP), and RIFE (aRchitecture for an Internet For Everybody).

Arup said it is providing specialist transport operational advice and industry promotion and facilitation.

Buckinghamshire County Council said the oneTRANSPORT platform will enable the development of more effective transport apps and web experiences.

The feasibility study for oneTRANSPORT was undertaken by a consortium spanning the Transport (Arup, WorldSensing, Traak); Telecom Industries (InterDigital Europe); and a Local Transport Authority (Buckinghamshire County Council).

The study explored integrating transport challenge from an Internet-of-Things (IoT) perspective, ‘recognising that the new oneM2M standard has been designed exactly for this purpose – not just for transport, but also with applicability to energy, health and smart cities’.

The study indicated a 2-3 year payback on investment, in additional to operational benefits and future-proofing of services.

 


The Smarter Travel Solution

The feasibility stage of the The Smarter Travel Solution, called The Smarter Travel Package, explored delivery of a range of options for getting travellers to their destinations via bus, rail, car club, cycle and taxi by means of a ‘one screen journey’.

The Smarter Travel Package aimed to alter the way consumers view and use public transport. The study was undertaken led by digital communications provider Telefónica O2, plus public transport provider FirstGroup, sustainability charity Forum for the Future and the UK’s largest car club, City Car Club.

Other participants included Leeds City Council,, University of Leeds and West Yorkshire Metro newspaper.

Prior to feasibility project, the proposal stated that future development would aim to converge new finance approaches, such as mobile phone payment.

Proposed project costs of the trial are £3,422,385, and the proposed project grant is £2,015,694.

 


CATCH! Citizens at the City's Heart

The feasibility study for the CATCH! Citizens at the City's Heart project Transport was funded within the SBRI Future Cities solutions competition, that in in the summer of 2012, provided funding for 29 UK cities to carry out feasibility studies to show the value that could be created by integrating city systems.

The CATCH feasibility study developed a demonstration web and demo Android app that showed routing based on the live conditions of transport networks.
