Provision of on-demand services from integrated systems: OR takes up the challenge

On 13th of October, in a well-attended workshop at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, the Operational Research (OR) community engaged with professionals in industry and the public sector, and, with them, took steps towards identifying and meeting the challenges of providing on-demand services in energy, transport and healthcare. This industry and public sector outreach workshop was organised by the Knowledge Transfer Network for Industrial Mathematics as part of the LANCS Initiative of the Operational Research community in the UK.

For more details and for copies of the presentations see Melvin Brown's blog of the event.

Of interest to the activity of the LANCS Initiative in the context of this workshop, and particularly regarding the provision of on-demand services in the energy sector, is a recent report by Dr Aidan Rhodes from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) on behalf of the Energy Generation and Supply Knowledge Transfer Network (EG&S KTN).
The report, entitled 'Smart Grids: Commercial Opportunities and Challenges for the UK', provides an informative definition of a smart grid, outlines the UK strategic priorities that a smart grid would assist and highlights the opportunities and challenges awaiting those who engage in this important emerging market.
Smart grids, which are intelligent electricity networks, are attracting a great deal of national and international interest and are viewed as an essential component in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
