The list of 8 Internet of Things Clusters


The Internet of Things Ecosystem Demonstrator is funding 8 business-led projects to deliver and launch ‘Internet of Things clusters’. Each cluster has a clearly defined application scenario and is an ‘open zone’ for experimentation and innovation. This will help industry address issues such as ecosystem development, validating business models, interoperability, data availability, trust and cost.

This is the list of the 8 clusters.  


Title:  i-MOVE (Internet of Moving Objects and Vehicles Ecosystem)

Lead: Aimes Grid Services

Partners include:  BT, Traak, Avanti, Placr, Merseyside Transport

The i-MOVE project will create an IoT ecosystem for transport focusing on urban "congestion corridors" to provide new services and applications from a scalable and interoperable information hub at the AIMES cloud computing campus in Liverpool.  i-MOVE will use data from local traffic systems, mobile cells, the Highways Agency, social media and transport services to create a Transport Applications Store where new products and business models will be developed for freight, public and private transport. 

By addressing congestion and disruption, the value proposition for the ecosystem will be enhanced and will create a sustainable facility and services.  The demonstrator will, in Phase 1, geographically focus upon Port access,  commuter journeys and private vehicle routes on Merseyside and subsequently scale to other UK cities.


Title: Open IoT Project

Lead: Arm Ltd

Partners include: AlertMe,, Enlight, 1248, Red Ninja, Neul and Badger Pass

Deployed internet-of-things systems today mostly follow a similar design pattern: a top-to-bottom 'silo' designed to address a particular problem.  The entire capital and operational expenditure in devices, connectivity and software must be justified in terms of that application alone, limiting the addressable market to a few high value applications and leaving a long tail of medium and small applications largely unserved.  This proposal's central aim is to take the existing, deployed IoT silos of three very different SMEs, each of whom feel their growth is limited by lack of openess in devices and infrastructure as well as in data, and open them up to realise new value from their assets.  In the process we will show how this creates space for horizontal service providers to enter the market, take out costs and drastically reduce barriers to entry for new innovators, including those addressing the long tail of IoT applications.


Title: STRIDE (Smart Transport IoT Data Ecosystem)

Lead:  British Telecom

Partners include: AIMES, BT, Ctrl-Shift, Uni Cambridge, Dartt

The Internet of Things will allow the Transport and Logistics sector to exploit its rich and complex data asset base more intelligently, leading to more efficient and efficacious use of transport infrastructure. The challenge is to create an environment where data providers have incentives to share data and application and service providers have access to it in a usable manner. This project, delivered by a consortium of world class partners, will create an IoT Cluster for Smart Transport, initially focussed on the East of England. It will provide a critical mass of diverse transport data including historical and real-time data collected from sensors. It will act as a focal point for the development of smart transport applications and business process improvements. The project will also determine the commercial conditions that must exist for such an ecosystem to thrive and will work with stakeholders to ensure a broad dissemination and uptake of project outputs.


Title:  EyeHub

Lead: Flexeye

Partners include:  Open Data Institute, Surery Uni, IBM, Guilford Borough Council

This project’s aim is to create a ‘proving ground’ for an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem on the University of Surrey's campus and then extend the concepts into the adjacent town of Guildford in a way that demonstrates how key IoT challenges can be resolved. These challenges include how to: link and aggregate heterogeneous data from many disparate and diverse devices into a common, internet-enabled environment in such a way that new applications and services can easily find it, make sense of it, and put it to use (through semantic interoperability); build a commercially sustainable business model around the supply and consumption of IoT data demonstrated through use cases; implement usable, practical and acceptable policies for the use of personal and potentially sensitive data; make it easy for other components of the IoT (including independently implemented information hubs) to be added and integrated through time, enabling growth and scalability of the IoT.


Title: Smart Streets IoT Hub 

Lead: InTouch

Partners include: Carillion, BalfourBeatty, Amey PLC, Lancaster Uni

The Smart Streets cluster aims to demonstrate the potential of the IoT to drive significant innovation in the UK's highways sector and beyond, by building a vibrant ecosystem of established players and innovative SMEs all utilizing a Smart Street's hub to deliver new applications and services. Highways maintenance is a £3.9 billion industry using large IT systems with low-levels of data accessibility, interoperability and innovation. We aim to radically change this by fostering a new ecosystem of small and large players around an open hub that aggregates data from an unprecedented consortium of major players, including three of the UK’s largest infrastructure service companies and includes all of the major asset classes for the M25 motorway. We will validate the hub and ecosystem with 3 internal 'apps' and engage with a network of 500+ SMEs for 3 others. The project is highly innovative with the potential to create a world-leading IoT cluster for the UK. 


Title:  Internet of Things - International airport demonstrator

Lead: LivingPlanIT

Partners include: London City Airport, Milligan Retail, IBM, Critical Software

The project will create an ‘Internet of Things’ cluster and demonstrator based around an international airport (London City Airport). It will build on the Living PlanIT Urban Operating System (UOS) to provide capabilities such as passenger flow measurement, lost hand baggage detection, customer loyalty program support including dynamic promotions, food pre-ordering services, missing passenger tracking, checked baggage tracking, personalized security and gate reminders, operational metrics and enhanced security in addition to more established  functionality in BMS and smart retail. Providing these capabilities would not be cost effective on a siloed or bespoke basis. The airport will be equipped with the UOS and a sensor network to enable data capture & the provision of services to customers, ensuring that solutions have direct commercial exposure and application. Consortium developers will use the UOS to develop innovative, exemplar applications & scalable value chains.


TitleDISTANCE – Internet of Schools Things


Partners includeIntel, Xively, Explorer HQ, Stakeholder Design, University of Birmingham’s Urban Climate Laboratory, UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, and The Open University Department of Computing

This project is focused on advancing education through the Internet of Things. The DISTANCE consortium will initially work with more than eight UK schools to define how Internet of School Things can enhance learning in science and other subjects, such as technology and geography. DISTANCE’s goals are to have students and teachers measure and share data—using new technology on the IoT—in ways that help make learning fun, link directly to the curriculum, and ultimately inform the design of the next generation of schools.  In turn, this will help incentivise businesses to collaborate with the education space, while better preparing children with skills needed to work within the digital economy. Schools piloting the ecosystem will focus on four themes:  transport, energy, weather and health. Following these trials, the consortium will develop comprehensive resources using the IoT that can be used at scale across the UK as the project moves into its second year.


Title: IoT-Bay: An Interoperability Hub for IoT Services  (IBS)

Lead: SH&BA

Partners include: EDF, IBM, Westminster City Council, BRE

The project demonstrates the commercial viability of using existing heterogeneous IoT Assets owned by Westminster City Council (WCC) with an interoperable open platform to deliver a wide range of value added information services. The project will use new and existing work to create a permanent platform as an interoperable virtual hub service solution for cross-sector IoT services in public and private spaces. It uses methods specified in ISO/IEC JTC1 18012-2:2012 and CENELEC CWA50560:2010 Interoperability Framework Requirements Specification. Initial services demonstrate use cases for value creation via IoT-enabled services in energy, occupancy, environmental sensing, real-time tourist information, lifestyle tools to inform and enhance facilities of local residents, visitors and workers in WCC with apps and web access providing a wide range of cross sector services using the interoperable IoT hub.  An "IoT-Bay" market value chain will be developed for creation of IoT-enabled services.
