With the majority of travel website traffic from mobile devices Dundee City Council introducing ‘QR code’ technology to all local bus stops

Travellers on Dundee’s bus network can now receive real time information on local bus services by scanning QR codes currently being posted on all of the city's bus stop timetables.

Dundee City Council announced on 11 July that the introduction of “QR code” technology at bus stops across the city is almost complete. According to Will Dawson, convener of Dundee City Council’s city “these days almost all of us have a mobile device and if you use it to download a QR reader app you can get instant access to real time information on the next departures from the bus stop you are standing at."

“We have created a QR code using the unique reference number which relates to every bus stop/bus shelter shown on www.dundeetravelinfo.com together with the unique identifier of the stop’s location.”

The first QR codes appeared on timetables which were updated for service changes in May and following further service changes at the end of last month, the majority of timetables in Dundee now show each stop’s unique code.

Dundee City Council has invested more than £3000 in the new technology after passengers identified information about the next bus as one of their top priorities when using the city’s network.

The council added that similar digital delivery of real time travel information has already proved popular in Edinburgh, the only other city in Scotland to use the scheme.

QR service already directly produced 5% uplift in traffic to city travel site

Steer Davies Gleave, a London based transport planning company, said it has worked with Dundee City Council for almost ten years developing user-focussed travel information, including the creation of a system to generate printed, stop-specific timetable information and web-based planning tools at www.dundeetravelinfo.com.

The addition of ‘QR codes’ to every bus stop display across the city - approximately 1,000 bus stops - provides smartphone users with direct access to real-time bus departure information for the stop they are at.

The company stated that since roll-out of the codes, monitoring of usage data has shown a 5% uplift in traffic to the website via mobile devices and tablets, directly attributable to the inclusion of the codes. Over 55% of all visitors to www.dundeetravelinfo.com are using a mobile device or tablet.

Dr Craig Nelson, who leads Steer Davies Gleave’s transport technology offer said;

“Alongside Dundee City Council we noticed a growing appetite for mobile transport information in the city. Including a QR code on timetables provides direct access for smartphone users to real-time information for every stop in Dundee. Seeing the resultant instant uplift in mobile traffic in Dundee is exciting and shows that cities and transport systems can benefit from simple, user-focussed technology solutions.”
