Transport Systems Catapult publishes new technology strategy focused on market sectors UK industry can best compete

The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) has published a new Technology Strategy that identifies eight Intelligent Mobility goals for innovation and investment and on market sectors it has identified where UK industry can best compete.

The strategy includes plans for the development, with partners in the Intelligent Mobility community, of an “IM Integrated Test Environment”, to facilitate a more coordinated approach to competing in the changing global transport industry.

On the realise of the strategy, TSC’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Yianni, said “We need to embrace change, collaborate and focus our investment towards areas where the UK has the best chance of capturing a significant share of the global market.”

”We are now calling on businesses, academia and government to contribute towards developing a collaborative roadmap which can draw the industry together under a common approach.” 


Intelligent Mobility market segments

The document included an assessment of constituent market segments of the Intelligent Mobility market - and predicts growth for each of between 5% and 25% over the next decade, with the exception of that for autonomous vehicles which it predicts to have growth of 58%.

Market segments where the UK should focus its efforts include: intermodal smart ticketing; security, resilience, safety and cyber security; Internet of Things asset management; monitoring and management systems; data management and analysis; data collection and communication platforms; and autonomous vehicles.


Intelligent Mobility goals and roadmaps

The focal points for TSC’s ‘vision for Intelligent Mobility’ is expressed around eight goals. Each goal is associated with a technology roadmap and takes into account potential developments in the next 15 years.

    • Increased measurement and awareness of eco footprint

    • Context and location-speci c information engenders better awareness of local safety risks
    • Dynamic management of emissions improves the wellbeing of people suffering from health problems linked to air pollution

    • Innovative businesses created on mobility platforms generate new revenue streams
    • Trust-building technologies create transparency, enhance collaboration and reduce costs

IM Integrated Test Environment

The strategy states that it is TSC’s aspiration to develop a set of assets, collectively called the “IM Integrated Test Environment” (ITE), to bring together capabilities around market the segments identified as being key for the UK. The ITE assets will go beyond what is already available in the UK.

The ITE will be supported by ‘IM Accelerator services’ for start-ups and new business ventures, or to scale up of existing businesses. These services will include intellectual property management, business modelling, systems engineering and collaborative working.

The IM Integrated Test Environment plans to comprise of a:

  • IM information platform
  • Centre for human-centric design
  • Modelling and visualisation platform
  • Centre for operational trials and evaluation
  • Centre for critical software systems development
  • IM accelerator

Hi Tim,
These guys seem to be on another planet to me as I drive around in my second hand 4X4 diesel Mitsubishi Pajero pulling my four wheel trailer across holes in the road big enough to wreck a smaller car.
But the hype is good and the salaries make it a worthwhile career. But Catapult might not be the right word to describe these organisations.
