KTN's Enhancing the End to End Journey competition consortia building event, the studio, Manchester, 17 September 2015

KTN’s Manchester brokerage event included presentations by Innovate UK and KTN, company elevator prices, plus the regional perspective of Peel Ports, Transport for Greater Manchester, as well as RSSB and case studies of two participants in previous Innovate UK supported projects: Interdigital and Red Ninja.

This was the second Innovate UK and KTN events in support of the Enhancing the End to End Journey Competition. Beforehand, a briefing and networking event was held in London on 19 August, plus a similar event followed the following week in Edinburgh.

 

Introduction to the Competition, Karla Jakeman, Portfolio Manager, Innovate UK

Having welcomed some familiar and some new faces, Karla Jakeman provided the background factors that inspired formulation of the Enhancing the End to End Journey Competition.

Innovate UK is looking to invest £10 million in Collaborative R&D to “stimulate innovation in the needs and facilitating technologies behind mobility as a service and multi-modal transport systems”.

This aligns with the previous Local Authority Solutions for Integrated Transport competition, and the recent Connected and Autonomous Vehicles competition.

It is motivated by the need to address the predicted £300 billion cost the UK economy per year of congestion by 2030; taking the approach of optimising existing infrastructure while still supporting economic growth.

Other factors that have led to this investment include the ageing population, a rail network is under stress and an increasing population placing an increased requirement for goods entering the logistics chain.

“As consumers, we’re also increasingly demanding about how we want our stuff, plus there’s a shift to using rather than owning transport.”

“Therefore we’re seeking innovative proposals to help develop mobility as a service. An illustrative example being ITS Finland; that claims to be ‘the first full ecosystem service provider in the world in the field of Mobility-as-a-Service’.”

“We’re seeking innovative proposals that facilitate seamless end-to-end journeys for people and goods, increasing the availability, capacity and ease of use for customers”.

“Whether a traveller or goods mover, customers should be able to select a complete journey from one starting point to a final end point, and be offered transport options with differing profiles, costs and schedules”.

“To achieve this, a near real-time understanding of the transport system as a whole is required, exploiting the location of assets used as the basis for new services”.

 

Introduction to the Scope, James Turner, Lead Technologist - Transport Systems, Innovate UK

James Turner proposed that for mobility as a service to be effective there needs to be real-time understanding of journeys, and new incentives for changed travel behaviour.

To encourage these developments, the Enhancing the End to End Journey Competition aims to bring together industry, local authorities and transport service providers to devise new business models and technologies.

Tp respond to these challenges proposals should cover one or more of the themes: network and data connectivity within modes and to users; infrastructure; and customer interaction and experience.

Within these themes, consortia will be expected to provide innovation in one or more of the following challenge areas:

For the ‘network and data connectivity within modes and to users’ theme, these challenge areas are:

  • Open/emerging standardised data schemes, applicable to all modes of travel, such as data connectivity between transport modes
  • Presentation of aggregated travel and ticketing options to transport users, such as a central payment platform and multi-modal interchange ‘marketplace’
  • Economic incentives for a collaborative culture across the transport industry, such as industry to industry engagement and new business models

For the ‘Infrastructure’ theme, consortia should provide innovation in:

  • Fusion and analytics of big data assets, including: rail, motorway and other automotive data, taxi services, domestic air data and maritime data, emerging transport modes, and parking data.
  • Understanding of transport networks, including: technologies that provide new understanding of the status of individual modes, and enablers of ‘smart’ infrastructure and interoperability.
  • Helping freight operators find ways to move a larger range of freight more widely, including internet-purchased freight and freight sharing services.

For the ‘Customer interaction & experience’ theme, consortia should provide innovation in:

  • Customer experience and delivery of information Personalised and profiled mobility planning, including, but not limited to: commuters (optimised by time or cost); tourist focus (optimised by attraction or scenic routes); network focus (optimised by load balancing)
  • Changing travel behaviours through incentivisation
  • Assistance for an ageing population
  • Technologies for enhanced user information, including, but not limited to: passenger interaction, novel display methods, and strategies for creating a sense of ownership

Innovate UK is especially interested in new business models, that can be sustained after funding, are balanced between public and commercial interests, and are scalable, address at least two transport modes and offer trials both through modelling and in-the-field laboratories. There also needs to be a plan for exploitation, include optimisation strategies for new revenue and should have high technology readiness levels.

Applications must also address permission aspects of data. Also technology investment, management issues, collaboration and commercial arrangements and synergies with other projects (such as the Connected and Autonomous Vehicles competition).

Other matters to be addressed include how ‘unknowns’ will be dealt with, the degree of novelty of the proposal, cash flow and a risk review.

“We urge terms of reference between partners to be to set in stone at an early stage. Consortia should agree on matters to do with intellectual property, dovetailing with other competitions, and market exploitation.”

Rob Furlong picked out as highlights that applicants should to pay particular attention to the societal challenges that arise and make sure proposals joined-up with other competitions, as it helps to think of other travel options.

Arising in the Q&As was clarification of ‘bridging’ in the documentation, defined as making mode changes as seamless as possible, for example provision of advance data on parking spaces can save travel time. Also, Transport Systems Catapult travellers needs study could point to pain points of these bridging points and where required data might not already exist, or is currently locked within ‘silos’.

Walking was defined as a distinct mode, that was suggested should be an issue in which local authorities are engaged.

Roland Strube, Hayfield Sustainable Transport Limited

Hayfield Sustainable Transport is a community minibus operator in Derbyshire.

Hayfield offers tools for passengers to form travel groups, and proposes journeys based on people travelling together.

Its ‘lightbulb moment’ came in integrating demand with community services already used.

It is looking for partners including coach operators, Train Operating Companies, Business park managers and organisers of ticketed events.

Peter Lilley, iGeolise

iGeolise changes the mindset toward thinking of travel in terms of time of travel rather than distance, as used on services such as zoopla.com and visit Britain.

“Our API already covers end to end multimodal routing, showing journeys as humans travel. We know how people travel using different modes but don't yet have real-time data, public transport or road data, parking space availability data and haven’t yet added domestic air data. We’re also used to business to business, rather than consumer oriented solutions. We want to make our own application for end-to-end real-time routing API, upon which clients can build their solutions, or be part of another project to provide end-to-end multi-modal routing.”

Daniel Dearing, Digital Catapult

Digital Catapult helps people working in the digital economy, with experience in closed organisational data and personal data.

Current projects include the Data Catalyser project, a suite of services enabling organisations to create value from mixing closed datasets, and the Trust Framework that seeks to write “the rules for the digital road” to empower the individual, if they so choose, to share their data provided through ‘informed consent’.

“We’d like to partner as a research organisation and explore issues of trust and privacy of data”.

Ben Davis, Gobotix

Gobotix is involved in the Greenwich GATEway driverless car project and autonomous rail inspection projects. It is looking at other modes of transport to provide navigation and mapping/Survey systems, autonomous vehicle control and fly-by-wire systems.

It’s proposal is to target new transport installations and provide smart drivers aids that at a later time can be switched to full-autonomy. It’s also looking at helping disabled travellers with end-to-end assistive technology.

Charles Hunter, Mudlark

Mudlark is a Sheffield-based games company offering games and gaming interfaces to play with, and understand, data - particularly transport games and data. “So this a great fit for this competition.”

Chromaroma is an Oyster card powered travel, card based, game - that offers Londoners insight into their travel. Another project is WEND - supported by a EU Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Fund - a mobile game that understands user movement patterns.

“We’re Looking to get together with others who agree that the individual is the ultimate transport integrator”.

Sumit Mund, Mund Consulting

Mund Consulting is a ‘big data’ company with expertise in predictive analytics. “Our idea is to use real-time analytics to improve multi-modal transport in urban areas."

“We’ve identified two needs: offering real-time insight for users of all possible transport options so they can make informed decisions, and, secondly, for transport authorities for better management of networks - by smoothly re-directing traffic flow across networks to avoid disturbances, incidents, and congestion”.

Thales UK is currently involved in three Innovate UK transport projects: the Enabling the digital railway A People Centred Approach to Intelligent, Proactive, Predictive (PCIPP) Asset Management using Remote Condition Monitoring Data; the Maritime autonomous systems Autonomous Operation and Collision Avoidance project and the POLARBEAR - Pattern Of Life ANPR Behaviour Extraction Analysis and Recognition project funded under the Data Exploration - Creating New Insight and Value ICT competition.

“We're interested in travel pain relief and personal journey satisfaction”.

“Our proposal is personalised journey wellbeing, based on self-quantified travellers, perceiving end-to-end journeys as a flow of experiences over which they have control, as opposed to a passive function of cost and time imposed on them by the transport operator.”

“We’re looking to applications that sell new services to travellers en route, bend demand to best matched travel routes and provides personal journey satisfaction. Mindful journeys consider customer pain points, customer experience, and ‘self-actualization’ of customer needs”.

Douglas Dalziel, Transport Focus

Transport Focus represents the transport user interest. We are the official use a watchdog for transport passengers (rail, bus, coach and tram) and users of the Strategic Roads Network (SRN) in England. We conduct the National passenger survey involving 30,000 passengers surveyed twice a year. We’ll also be conducting an online survey of road users, involving 20,000 respondents, provided via DVLA.”

“Transport Focus can offer evidence-based research and the ability to influence industry policy and practice through links with government and the transport industry.”

Nick Knorr, Transport Systems Catapult

Transport Systems Catapult's two year Traveller Needs and UK Capability Study - the findings of which is expected to be published in November 2015, has researched the pain points for travellers and blockages to mobility as a service.

 

[The Transport Needs Study is expected to be published on the 13 October].

TSC’s proposition for the competition is the creation of a digital platform and human centred design approach to overcoming the challenges of multi-modal integration.

Carl Partridge, Transix

Transix is a mobile tech developer, that produces transport apps and API platforms. It has public sector contracts with Traveline, TravelWest, and Bristol Futures API. Its in-house products includes Bus Checker.

“Imagine if smartphones could communicate with transport modes. This would result in numerous and exciting applications, including better tracking information and ticketing. The missing cog is data - which could be provided by using Bluetooth Low Energy ‘iBeacon’ technologies, using open standards to create open data suitable for exchange.”

“If made context-aware in this way, mobile devices would ‘know’ about the vehicle that is being travelled on, offering ‘huge’ benefits to travellers, operators and data consumers.”

Transix is looking for bus or train operators seeking better metrics, and developers looking to make their applications context aware.

Andreas 'Zac' Zachariah (CEO), TravelAI

TravelAI crosses digital silos. For example the WeCycle app tracked 1,800,000 miles of from 100,000 users. The app automatically recorded cyclist’s routes to show where investment would have the biggest impact on safety.”

“We’re also involved with the WEND project and The Catch! on-demand mobility solution supported by Innovate UK in the Future Cities solutions SBRI_Future Cities Solution - Phase 2 competition.”.

Liverpool2 and Port Salford - Transforming Logistics, case study by Stephen Carr, Head of Business Development, Peel Ports (Mersey)

The port of Liverpool and the Manchester ship canal has 10 motorways within 10 miles and are close to densely populated areas so is a great asset that could create a multi-modal interchange - except that Gladstone Dock is limited to 4000 TEUs capacity vessels. So Peel Ports decided to develop a new £300 million deep water container terminal known as Liverpool2 further upstream in the Mersey basin, to include 1,500,000 square feet of warehousing space.

Connected to the Liverpool2 container terminal, Port Salford is on the Manchester Ship Canal, the only ship canal in the United Kingdom and the eighth longest in the world. General Mills UK & Ireland – owners of brands including Old El Paso, Green Giant, Betty Crocker and Nature Valley – is to be the first tenant at a new state-of-the-art distribution hub that has been projected to save 600,000 road haulage miles each year as a result of the terminal also performing as a warehousing base close to its markets.

The 280,000 sq. ft. Port Salford site – which will be run by food and drink logistics expert Culina Group – will be act a central hub for General Mills’ brands arriving by short sea freight from Europe.

“This is a case study of changing business models - the lesson being to ensure all parties involved gain, and work collectively to fix issues”.

 

The Transport for Greater Manchester Perspective: A ‘Rainbow of Challenges’ from the ‘heart’ of the Northern Powerhouse - Simon Ho, Senior Innovation Officer, Transport for Greater Manchester and Founding Board Member of the Northern Robotics Network

A show of hands showed few people arrived at the meeting by car - underlining the good transport connections of the region.

This was one reason why Greater Manchester presented opportunities for innovation, as “Manchester has a long tradition of ‘doing things differently’ and leading on ‘game-changing’ technologies.”

Greater Manchester has a population of 2.7m and vigorous city centre growth; the Graphene Institute; the UK’s most extensive local tram network; significant logisticcs facilities; a growing visitor economy and the largest concentration of media outlets outside of London in the UK.

It was suggested as a suitable test-bed opportunity for freight & logistics, open data curation and even ‘pop-up’ mass transit.

Simon Ho added, “Northern cities have come together for a scaleable End-to-End type solution - all committed to the Northern Powerhouse concept.”

 

The Horizon Tool - Ben Peace, KTN

“The process of innovation starts with thinking about future markets, and, indeed, the social factors are where the value tends to lie. The Horizons Tool is being used by Catapults, Innovate UK to inform its competitions and can be used for helping applicants - in thinking more broadly, as a checklist.”

 

 

 

 

Case Study 1: An SME Perspective on Project Participation - Lee Omar, Red Ninja Studios

Lee Omar of Red Ninja Studios - a small software company - offered a viewpoint on working with innovate UK.

“Our slogan is ‘we design the future’ and our company is made up of software engineers engineers data scientists. Innovate UK has been instrumental in building the company.”

Red Ninja’s first involvement in an Innovate UK project was as a sub-contractor in the Open IoT Project, led by ARM Limited and funded under the Internet of things ecosystem demonstrator competition from April 2013 to April 2014 - working with, in addition to ARM, with Intellisense, AlertMe, Enlight, 1248, Neul and Badger Pass.

Red Ninja developed a ‘smart’ business app for ARM and ‘smart’ home app for AlertMe. Its role as lead app developer and founder member of the HyperCAT consortium provided an additional platform to strengthen. HyperCat is a consortium and standard driving secure and interoperable Internet of Things (IoT) for Industry.

“We had product out of it but more importantly had relationships with ARM and the wider ecosystem, and also member of the HyperCAT consortium. That £35,000 project provided a springboard from which to grow”.

HyperCAT for All - the 2.0 version - is supported with £1.6m of Innovate UK to create an inclusive ‘one stop shop’ of best practice for the Internet of Things. “We’re now working with companies such as BT and British Aerospace, and we see use-cases in transport such as smart parking, last mile deliveries, logistics and commuter stuff because of the partnership”.

Unlike the two above, for the iNSIGHT: Development of a holistic mobile commerce proposition project for the Reimagining The Hight Street SBRI phase 1 competition, Red Ninja was the primary participant rather than a sub-contractor. For this £100,000, 6 months, project in 2014, it worked with Liverpool One city centre shopping centre (owned by the Grosvenor Group) to develop a mobile commerce app.

Working with the Digital Catapult, Mersey Travel, and retailers the product was aimed at retail business to help them understand how people move around cities. “It used anonymised data from from smart phone sensors to plan for retail estates and improve door to door journeys”.

“We found shoppers wanted confidence in their journey planning, such as for parking.”

The biggest project we’ve led so far is to start next month, for the Urban living: integrated products and services competition the winner of which were announced in June this year. “The Life First Emergency Traffic Control or "LIFE" is a two year 660,000 budget project, that shows how far we've come in two years”.

This will produce data from cities for future services, and is relevant to health and transport for reducing ambulance response times and to control traffic lights - with pilots in Liverpool and Manchester. Partners include Future Cities Catapult, Siemens, Imtech, and Transport Systems Catapult. “We want to create our own IP and leverage our talent and that from these other companies.”

“For all projects we want money for doing stuff but it’s interesting to see where the magic arises.”

“The lessons we’ve learned are that you win some and you lose some - but even when we’ve lost bids it connected us with others, that in some cases led to other things.”

“Otherwise, it's hard to access companies but we found big companies need SMEs as these big companies tend to be ‘old school’ and clunky, that need to be driven by SMEs.

“The biggest win is the networking opportunities and the chance to be a peer and and a partner. So it’s good to come to the these types of events."

“I’d recommend connecting with KTN. Tessa is super-connected so its good to chat with her and her colleagues.”

 

RSSB support to broker connections to train operators - Howard Farbrother, RSSB

Howard Farbother of RSSB said rail has a lot of acronyms, is not easy to get into but RSSB can help as it understands the railway environment. The railway system is not innovative by nature as safety dominates the mindset but it will innovate when it can.

As a pilot 1% of the network’s revenue is ring fenced for innovation and and “a load of stuff” is going on., such as funding competitions.

Relevant projects include:

RSSB is keen on the information thread behind the Enhancing the End to End Journey competition and think the main barrier is aligning the various information parts.

RSSB can help by providing access to rail, partners capabilities and projects.

We also recommend the Rail Industry Associations’s Unlocking Innovation Scheme.

 

KTN Hints and Tips for the competition process

Rob Furlong’s hints and tips session stressed “now is the golden opportunity to ask questions of Innovate UK and KTN”.

“In application forms we’ve seen, the environmental and social impact questions are often the worst answered: so don’t neglect questions question requiring information such as job creation and end-of-life issues.”

Other suggestions were to define all acronyms, pay attention to all relevant detail, answer the basic questions and remember the 18 November deadline. A key piece advice was to submit a week beforehand to “get into the system” - and submit subsequent drafts after that as each submission will over-write earlier drafts.

 

 

Case Study 2: oneTRANSPORT an integrated transport infrastructure to support the Enhancing the End to End Journey - Dr Walter Tuttlebee, Wireless Technology Innovation & Strategy Ltd

Walter Tuttlebee is a freelance consultant, having had a career in wireless R&D, with roles in research, engineering, business development, strategy and board-level management.

He has been working for US telecoms company InterDigital - that last month led a successful bid to be supported for the trial phase of Innovate UK’s Integrated transport local authority solutions competition, following a feasibility stage in 2014.

A consortium of eleven partners will participate in the oneTRANSPORT project, that will aim to enable multimodal transport information to be published by data owners (such transport authorities and third parties) to be accessed by transport authorities, application developers and others.

oneTRANSPORT is claimed to be an open, standardised, marketplace solution for transport data, enabling companies to deliver services to “transport marketplaces”.

According to Dr. Tuttlebee, “Transport has evolved into a world of silos. Operators have been hoarders of data leading to a fragmented user experience. oneTRANSPORT looks to fill in gaps, using things to communicate with things using the oneM2M standard. This international standard has been designed for things to communicate with things, as approved by eight of the leading ICT standards bodies, building on 3G and 4G, and operating above the HTTP layer to support multiple suppliers developing interfaces and APIs of Machine to Machine services platform, such as SK telecoms in Korea”.

“It is independent of sectors and industries, can be discovered and is designed to create a marketplace for data.”

“It’s about scaling data and creating business models”.

“Transport Systems Catapult’s March 2015 The Transport Data Revolution investigation into the data required to support and drive intelligent mobility found most transport authorities used closed data sets. But oneM2M offers a new source of increased feedback and data analysis.”

“It can be deployed across local authority boundaries and can create money flows for developers and data owners. It also creates opportunities to involve other modes of transport.

“Good applications will survive and prosper. The goal is to create deployments that can achieve breakeven in as a short a time of around two years.”

“We want to share with other local authorities anticipating a nationwide rollout, and beyond that global rollout."

In conclusion, oneTranport uses open standards and aims to break data silos down.”
