In partnership with Transport Systems Catapult (TSC), the Department for Transport has opened a call for applications to provide a ‘DfT Data Visualisation platform Demonstrator’ to help improve the visualisation and communication of information about roads investment across England, and to pilot support decisions about development of better data visualisation capability within DfT.
Part of ongoing effort by DfT to provide a ‘richer picture’ to support investment decisions
A real-time data visualisation platform demonstrator (the Visualisation platform) is seen as having significant potential to support better communication of the impacts of the Departments future road investment, as set out in Road Investment Strategies.
It would also support ongoing DfT work to examine how the DfT can provide a ‘richer picture’ of information to underpin appraisal and investment decisions and to present data in more visual, engaging and impactful ways.
An important capability to be investigated is the way in which different data sets can be combined to provide new insights into the information.
This is a unique opportunity for the successful applicant to demonstrate the benefits of their technology to senior policy makers within the DfT. The vision that the TSC and DfT have for the Visualisation platform, information required for the application process and the assessment criteria are detailed below.
Desktop and touchscreen application for visualising real-time roads data, and location, in 3D
The Visualisation platform should take the form of a software application for a desktop or laptop computer that should allow data relating to the network of major roads in England (the NTIS network - approx. 7,500 road links) to be displayed ‘geospatially’ in a real time 3D environment.
The 3D environment should represent England in such a way that the user can see the data in the context of the location, such as by integrating aerial photography or integration with a mapping service.
Applications close 8 February
This call has a suggested guide price of £17,000 and not more than £20,000 and is open for applications from Wednesday 20 January 2016 until close of business Monday 8 February 2016. Applications should be made by completing an application form and emailing the completed form and other supporting Appendices to firstname.lastname@example.org with the title 'Data Visualisation platform Call'.
