Threat to UK pig industry from new and deadly strain of PEDV

A new deadly strain of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea Virus (PEDV) has spread from China to the US, leading to a call for vigilance to stop the disease coming to the UK.

Pig farmers are being urged to heighten their biosecurity, particularly in terms of visitors/visits overseas.

This new strain of PEDV causes high (up to 100%) mortality rates in newborn piglets and there currently no effective treatment available.
