UK replaces Japan as world leader in mobile use

UK residents consume more data on their phones or tablets than any other country, according to an Ofcom report  on mobile use published last week. The communications regulator found that activities such as web browsing, video streaming and the use of social networking sites now exceed those in Japan, the long established world leader. One sixth of all website traffic in the UK was on a mobile, tablet or other connected device, higher than any other country in Europe.

Ofcom's International Communications Market Report 2012  found that the UK data has "one of the highest levels of penetration of smartphones in the world at 58% of the population, while just fewer than one in five owns a tablet computer."

The report suggests that the increase in UK data usage could stem from more users accessing television via Internet.

Other highlights of the report include: 

  • Britons spend more than £1,000 a year each shopping online, the most of any other country. 
  • The average UK viewer watches just over four hours of television every day, only Americans and Italians watch more.
  • Britain has one of the highest proportions of homes with high-definition TV and nearly one in five UK consumers say they own a smart TV
  • UK internet users access the web on their laptop more than those in any other country. 

''Our research reveals that the UK leads the way in using the internet on the move,"  said James Thickett, Ofcom's director of research.

The report, now in it's seventh year, was compiled using date from 9,152 consumers in nine countries: the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the US, Japan, China and Australia.
