The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from Defence Security to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.

 

The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Sheffield Smart Lab – The Independent Living Challenge

In common with cities around the world, Sheffield has thousands of people who are struggling to maintain their independence and wellbeing. Just over 6000 people in the city are effectively registered with GPs as housebound.  Of these, 2500 are unfortunately at a high risk of hospital admission, and currently admitted to hospital on average twice a year at a cost to the NHS of more than £12m.

We know that between 30% and 40% of people in our hospitals could be supported equally well in the comfort of their own home. However, there is no single solution to this problem as the reasons for a decline in health and wellbeing, or admission to hospital, are varied and personal, and so, therefore, are the ways to support people in maintaining their independence.

The short- to medium-term challenges the city faces are

·         how to support people at risk of declining wellbeing and health to identify ways to reduce this risk and maintain their independence

·         how to coordinate this support and make sure that the information, advice, activities, and support they need is easily accessible.

Sheffield’s Adult Social Care and the NHS services currently work together to support citizens with a range of solutions including assistive technology and community support programmes. However, they want to improve to better meet the needs of individuals and the community whilst improving efficiency.

Sheffield is looking for solutions to transform the connectivity of housebound people and help coordinate their care. For many, peer learning, social contact or contributing to their community will make a massive positive difference; for others it might be equipment, aids or adaptation to their home; and, for others it might be a course of physiotherapy, or some physical activity. For most of course, it will be a combination of different approaches that, for some, could mean a substantive change in lifestyle.

The city welcomes solutions that address the rich variety of needs and preferences of the residents of Sheffield and their communities including the critical role of carers and family members, often with the added difficulty of geographical separation. What solutions can we provide to the residents of Sheffield to help them maintain their independence and safeguard their quality of life for as long as possible?

The Opportunity  

Up to ten winning teams will be invited to the Sheffield Smart Lab incubation and acceleration programme, designed to help entrepreneurs pilot their idea, product or service in Sheffield.

What is unique about this programme?

Inside Knowledge. You won’t work in a bubble. You will have curated access to City officials, end-users, customers, and experts from Amey, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.

A chance to pilot with institutional support. The programme aims to get the best solutions up and running in Sheffield. This means live testing, with access to the required data and locations for your pilot, provided by Sheffield City Council, Amey and other third parties as appropriate.

What can you expect?

Six week incubation phase. Tailored to understanding and developing your idea, product or service to the market conditions in Sheffield. Includes engaging with the stakeholders and institutions involved in your challenge.

Six week accelerator phase. Get your solution market ready with a robust context-specific business model.

Total of three weeks in residence. Core content organised into three separate weeks of intensive training and workshops in Sheffield, giving you the freedom to plan and work as appropriate.

·         Week 1: Induction to the Sheffield Smart Lab and networking with city and industry partners.

·         Week 6: Presentation of business cases to the project management committee.

·         Week 12: Exposure to potential funders, key UK stakeholders in the smart, tech market, and support to approaching the UK market.

Intensive mentoring. Based on your needs, and delivered by Creative Sheffield’s business adviser team.

Dedicated office space. Available for the duration of the programme.

A demo day. Presenting piloted solutions to the public.
