The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from Defence Security to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.


The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Knowledge Transfer Network is Innovate UK's innovation network partner, and also works with other funders to provide innovation networking services and fulfil our mission to drive UK growth.

Does your company have a problem that could be solved by mathematicians?

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) and the e-Infrastructure SIG wish to support up to five SMEs in participating in the 2015 European Study Group in Industrial Mathematics. This mini competition has the aim of identifying appropriate candidate companies and problems to take part in the Study Group in Manchester on 23 – 27 March 2015. The closing date for applications is the 19 December 2014 at midnight.

What does the Study Group do?

The European Study Groups for Industrial Mathematics have been running since the sixties. They are quite unique in what they do… 

The Study Groups bring together a large audience (100 or so) of mathematicians and statisticians together with industry representatives. The industry representatives pitch problems to the mathematicians who then spend a week of intense collaboration trying to identify routes to solve these problems.

Two fantastic KTN case studies came out of a previous Study Group event in Oxford:

1.     Optimisation of Facial Recognition Algorithms

2.     Searching Colour Content in Large Compressed Video Data

Funding to take part

Participation in the Study Group normally costs £7,500, however, help is at hand via a mini competition being run by the University of Manchester, Smith Institute and the Knowledge Transfer Network to select candidate SMEs to receive support to participate in the Study Group. This support will cover:

  • The fees that companies would normally pay to participate
  • Advice in preparing challenges for presentation at the event.
  • Coordinating work on the problem during the week
  • Overseeing the capture of output in a final report

The SME will also leave with a set of contacts who can help supply them with ongoing mathematical support.

What kind of projects are we looking for?

This year we are looking to extend our reach to attract problems from ANY sectorBroadly speaking, we are interested in hearing from companies who have the possibility of benefiting from the insights gained through mathematical analysis of their problems. These problems could include:

  • Modelling problems of multiphysical systems and dynamical systems, materials performance
  • Design, development and optimization of processes; logistical, manufacturing for example
  • Problems which address the data processing, algorithm design or performance, or numerically intensive solutions of mathematical models.
