KTN's online platform helps you to make the connections you need

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from Defence Security to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.

The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Knowledge Transfer Network is Innovate UK's innovation network partner, and also works with other funders to provide innovation networking services and fulfil our mission to drive UK growth.

We link new ideas and opportunities with expertise, markets and finance through our network of businesses, universities, funders and investors. From agri-food to autonomous systems and from energy to design, KTN combines expertise in all sectors with the ability to cross boundaries. Connecting with KTN can lead to potential partners, horizon-expanding events and innovation insights relevant to your needs.

Independent Living at Home for the elderly: Resilience Award

The Swiss Re Foundation Resilience Award recognises entrepreneurial initiatives that take innovative approaches to building resilient societies and realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. While resilience is the core theme of the annual award program, its specific focus will change depending on current trends and developments.

The 2016 award focuses on innovative solutions that enable the elderly to live independently at home. The following topics are in scope:

- Smart homes
- Intergenerational support
- Health care delivery redesigned
- Healthy aging & preventive health
- Long-term care intervention
- Financial solutions

You can download a more detailed overview on areas and different aspects here.

The award program involves a financial grant from the Swiss Re Foundation and, depending on the initiative’s nature, scope and needs, non-financial contributions from Swiss Re employees such as coaching and technical advice. With this approach, we want to give entrepreneurs the chance to collaborate with experienced resilience experts in developing and strengthening their ventures.

Four finalists are invited to pitch their ventures face-to-face at an event attended by award jury members, subject matter experts, Swiss Re clients and Swiss Re employees. The total prize money of CHF 800 000 is divided among the winner (up to CHF 400'000) and the three runners-up.

Selection criteria

The Foundation is specifically interested in enterprises that address the above-listed challenges and meet a defined set of criteria.

Selection process

The Resilience Award selection process consists of four phases. Applicants are informed at the end of each phase whether they have been selected to proceed to the next one.

Starting with a simple online form, applicants are required to gradually invest more time and disclose more information if and as they progress to each subsequent stage of the selection process. Please find a detailed description of the selection process here.

How to apply

Candidates are requested to complete the online questionnaire on their initiative by 22 May 2016, 24.00 CET. Only applications completed in English and submitted by this deadline will be considered.
