In 2013 Innovate UK ran the Future Energy Management for Buildings competition and invested £3.97m into ten collaborative R&D projects.

You can view the original public descriptions of the projects here (although some of the details have altered since publication):  https://interact.innovateuk.org/documents/1524978/1866952/Future%20energy%20management%20for%20buildings%20-%20Competition%20results

The projects are between 15 and 30 months in duration, which means the shortest finished in October 2015 and the longest is due to complete by January 2017.

About the projects

The KTN has created an insightful article about the companies and people behind these innovation projects.  You can find it here:  https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/modernbuiltktn/article-view/-/blogs/results-of-collaborative-r-d-competition-future-energy-management-for-buildin-1

More recently in Oct 2015 the teams assembled at the 'Reducing Energy Demand with Smart Buildings' summit event.  They all presented their projects and these were recorded and will soon be released online. You can also catch-up on highlights at #SmartBuildings15

Why we ran the competition

The market for building energy data management is growing rapidly.  Just for Building Energy Management Systems the global market is expected to grow threefold by 2020 to $6bn/yr.  The UK is already the sixth largest supplier of energy management solutions with £2.8bn of UK sales, and £0.34bn of exports. This sector has a strong growth potential, with UK companies taking a lead on technical solutions, growing concern overseas for energy resilience, and greater emphasis on connected energy systems and services in the coming decade.
