FP7 is the short name for the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. This is the EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe and it will run from 2007 to 2013. The EC budget for the next seven years is € 50.5 billion and the Euratom budget for the next five years is € 2.7 billion. FP7 supports research in selected priority areas - the aim being to make, or keep, the EU as a world leader in those sectors.
I am Dr Jim Clipson, I am the Technology Strategy Board’s EU Business Manager and with my colleague Graham Mobbs, who is the European Operations Manager we are seeking to increase the number of UK businesses engaging with European Research and Development.
The Technology Strategy Board is responsible for a national helpline 0300 321 4357 which is the first point of contact for any enquiries about European activity. For FP7 – which is the EU’s main scheme for R&D - there is a set of National Contact Points that offer:
- Guidance on choosing thematic priorities and instruments,
- Advice on administrative procedures and contractual issues.

Eurostars is open to all sectors for funding applications on a continuous basis until 2013; there are two calls a year closing in March and in September.
