Call for Partners – Remote Sensing of Vegetation and Soils

Pasture-based AgEcosystem Group is seeking partners with experience and expertise of remote sensing of vegetation and soils. This group is developing a newly created high spatial resolution satellite remote sensing programme, involved in extracting parameters from an experimental site related to vegetation, moisture and other nutrient measurements such as organic matter and nitrogen. They need help with the following:

  • What type of measurements and data can they hope to achieve, and methods for extraction?
  • What are the appropriate sensors and bands in the spectrum?
  • What software and computing power should be used?

“Our research station has heavily invested in its pasture land transforming it into an experimental farm platform, a unique national capability for external research groups or individuals to apply for funding to make use of. The platform has been split into three agricultural management themes, business-as-usual, legume-based and new innovations. Each area is hydrologically isolated, with water, nutrient flows and greenhouse gas data sent to the server by automatic sensors, and biodiversity and productivity will be measured. The institute has lab facilities including isotope analysis equipment, plus modelling capability. Data generated will improve knowledge on biological processes in managed farm systems, and guide decisions on sustainable food production. After a baseline period for all areas, the separate areas will be farmed long-term and experiments carried out according to the land management themes. This is an exciting period during which we will want to assess the spatial variability and temporal change of our platform”.
