Needs and Opportunities of Energy Storage in a Resilient UK Energy Supply

A fundamental requirement of a secured and resilient energy supply is to balance supply and demand, both instantaneously and over planned periods. With around 20% (19GWe) of the UK’s electricity generation due to go offline over the next decade, new variable renewable generation and relatively inflexible nuclear generation will be required to meet both energy needs and climate change targets. Whilst gas-fired power plants will continue to provide some level of balancing flexibility, this shift towards higher ratio of non-dispatchable energy sources will require a greater use of electrical and heat energy storage technologies in the future. 
Grid-scale storage of electricity is one of the biggest challenges for the future, as the potential benefits are immense for both the transmission and the distribution networks. Benefits include cost reduction due to the reduction of current congestion, higher reliability due to increased stability and outage response as well as incremental voltage support . In addition, dispatchability permits the distributed generation owner to commit in advance, for a defined time, to provide an agreed power output .

The regulatory framework and Cost is often cited as a significant barrier to large-scale storage technology. However, advanced energy storage technologies are receiving a great deal of R&D funding and developments are expected to be significant in the coming decades, thus reducing the cost of energy storage in the long term. Therefore, cost modelling should consider not only the current cost of energy storage, but also the likely cost reductions in the future2. However, it is expected that the uptake of large scale energy storage will be relatively slow and uncertain due to the time needed by the grid network operators to get to grips on how to best integrate the storage capabilities into the system architecture. In addition, the market framework does not exist yet.

Globally, energy storage applications span across grid, distribution network and distibuted generation (DG) levels and may include some of the following technologies:

  • Batteries
  • Solar thermal electric steam (STES)
  • Pumped hydro
  • Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES
  • Flywheels
  • Super Capacitors
  • Compressed air energy storage (CAES) 

This Energy Storage Group leads the development of the UK's RD&D and industrial innovations in energy storage technologies at all scales of energy system to meet the need of a future UK resilient and secured energy supply.
