Niche Vehicle Network opens funding competitions for collaborative low carbon vehicle technology development and for demonstration projects

A total of £2,300,000 is to be made available for two Niche Vehicle Network (NVN) funding competitions under its automotive research and development programme.

Sponsored by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), Innovate UK and the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), the competitions focus on providing SMEs active in the low carbon vehicle technology sector with funding to undertake:

  • Early stage ‘proof of concept’ R&D, to take product ideas to the point where they can be successfully demonstrated on a vehicle
  • Later stage R&D, to move from demonstration stage to working prototypes and to establish manufacturing routes to production readiness

Niche Vehicle R&D Competition

Supported by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and Innovate UK, the Niche Vehicle R&D Competition is providing a grant pot of up to £1,300,000 for niche vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and technology organisations who wish to collaborate on innovative, industry-led projects primarily within the following technology categories:

  • Lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures
  • Electric machines and power electronics
  • Energy storage and energy management
  • Disruptive low emission vehicle technologies
  • Reduced emissions from internal combustion engines
  • Aerodynamics development
  • Digital innovation in low volume manufacturing

Projects must be industry led, aim to support the growth, productivity and competitiveness of the independent niche vehicle sector and demonstrate the developed technology on a UK non-human powered road-going or off-highway niche vehicle.

NVN expects to fund up to 12 projects, each with total project costs of up to £250,000 and lasting a maximum of 6 months. Grants will cover up to 50% of eligible project costs.

To enter this competition, the lead applicant MUST request an application pack by email (via nvn@cenex.co.uk) no later than noon on 29 July 2016.

SME & Supply Chain Competition

Supported by the Advanced Propulsion Centre, SME & Supply Chain Development Competition is providing a grant pot of up to £1,000,000 for vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and design/engineering organisations active in the UK low carbon vehicle propulsion sector who wish to collaborate on innovative, industry-led projects, that:

  • Deliver significant reductions in vehicle CO2 or other emissions compared to current best-in-class technologies
  • Align with Automotive Council Technology Group Roadmaps with respect to advanced propulsion solutions
  • Develop the UK’s supply chain in the field of low carbon vehicle propulsion technology

Projects need to demonstrate the development of propulsion technologies based around one or more of the following technology areas:

  • Internal combustion engines
  • Lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures
  • Electric machines and power electronics
  • Energy storage and energy management
  • Alternative propulsion systems

Projects must be collaborative and industry-led and include a vehicle manufacturer or a tier 1/ tier 2 supplier as appropriate and a further SME partner within the consortium. The competition is aimed primarily at SMEs but it is permissible to include one large company in each consortium.

Projects must aim to support the growth and competitiveness of the low carbon vehicle propulsion sector and apply the technology on a UK on or off road vehicle.

NVN expects to fund up to 4 projects with total project costs of up to £500,000 and lasting a maximum of 9 months.

To enter this competition, the lead applicant MUST request an application pack by email (via nvn@cenex.co.uk) no later than noon on 29 July 2016.

Niche Vehicle 2016 Competitions Launch 7 July at NEC

The call for applications for grant funded collaborative projects opened on 1 July and closes at noon on 19 August 2016. Lead applicants are required to an application pack by email (nvn@cenex.co.uk) no later than noon on 29 July 2016.

A competition briefing day to launch the R&D programme, with details of how to apply for grant funding will be held on the 7 July at the National Conference Centre.

The event is open to UK companies active in automotive research, design/engineering and manufacturing, including niche vehicle manufacturers and their supply chains.

To register to attend, email nvn@cenex.co.uk.
