Low Carbon Commercial Vehicle Demonstration Competition: Networking & Consortia Building Event

On the 14th July 2016 KTN hosted a networking and consortia building event for the Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trail funded by Office for Low Emission Vehicles, (OLEV), and Innovate UK.

Held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham, which is recognized as the finest and largest British motorcycle museum in the world (with over 1000 machines on display), the venue couldn’t have been more apt to bring together over 165 delegates to explore lively discussions, networking opportunities and gain knowledge of real life case studies throughout the morning.

Whilst the funding and opportunities were at the forefront of the afternoons sessions with the introduction of the latest £24 million OLEV and Innovate UK competition “Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trial”, the morning saw a brief overview of funding opportunities available through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, (APC), and other presentations from Cenex, Energy Technologies Institute, the LoCity project, LowCVP, Horizon2020 and case studies from the first low carbon truck demonstrator projects update.

Low Carbon Vehicle Update

KTN’s Mark Matchett, Knowledge Transfer Manager for Automotive, and Ajay Kapadia, Knowledge Transfer Manager for Composites, opened the stage for the Low Carbon Vehicle Update and review of the 2014 Innovate UK competition.

Mark introduced the Knowledge Transfer Network and its purpose in helping business to grow the economy by capturing maximum value from innovative ideas, scientific research and creativity.  With Ajay expanding on KTN’s offerings with details of activities and advanced materials to help businesses achieve innovative growth, placing particular emphasis on KTN’s ability to help partner collaborations.  Ajay also highlighted the LCV 2016 opportunity; being part of KTN’s Advanced Materials Innovation Showcase, in which KTN are looking for innovation and potentially game changing technologies being pioneered by UK-based SMEs and micro-enterprises.

Following the introduction of the day, Ben Morris, Executive Director of Howard Tenens, presented the first case study of Innovate UK funded projects from the 2014 competition, followed by Dominic Scholfield, Managing Director of Mint Green Sustainability providing a second case study on the day regarding their GO-Truck and DAF-Truck projects.

Steve Carroll from Cenex provided an overview of the results and activites from the 2012 – 2016, £11.5 million co-funded Low Carbon Truck Trial, with the final report planned for release in August.

Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trial Innovate UK Competition

Paul Gadd, Innovate UK’s programme manager for Automotive, introduced the new Innovate UK funding competition, Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trail, at the briefing event with the support of his colleagues Helen Feather and Jonathan Edge.

The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), along with Innovate UK are to invest up to £24 million to enable industry-led research trials and development of innovative vehicles or on-vehicle technology.  The competition is aimed at freight, logistics, utilities sectors and emergency services and must provide real-world emissions reductions.

The competition which opened on 11th July, consists of two streams:

Stream 1 will fund projects to trial vehicles and on-vehicle technology in the real world, supporting small trail fleets of low emission vehicles and their refueling/ charging infrastructure. These projects are expected to range in size of total costs from £500,000 to £5 million and last between 18 months and 2 years, with vehicle trials of at least one year.

Stream 2 will fund projects to develop or trial innovative and disruptive on-vehicle technology, systems or business models that reduce emissions in the real world.  The projects in stream 2 are expected to last no more than a year and range in size of project costs from £250,000 to £5 million.

Both streams of the competition must be collaborative and a business must lead the project.

Anyone interested in applying for either stream must register before noon on 12 October 2016.
