Round 4 of the Energy Catalyst is now open

Technology innovation is needed to solve the global energy sector ‘trilemma’ of:

  • low carbon
  • security of supply
  • affordability

These challenges are creating major global market opportunities. Innovative businesses in the UK can develop world-leading solutions to these challenges.

The fourth round of the Energy Catalyst is now open. There are 3 awards, each open to businesses, universities and research organisations:

The competition supports innovative solutions in any technology or sector area. The proposed solutions can focus on any part of the energy trilemma.

This competition is open now. Registration closes for the mid-stage and late-stage awards on 8 June 2016. Registration closes for the early-stage award on 7 September 2016. All 3 competitions close on 14 September 2016.

Background to the Energy Catalyst

The aim of the Energy Catalyst is to speed up the best of UK innovation at all development stages. It helps businesses progress their innovations to commercial readiness.

Innovate UK, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) set up the Energy Catalyst in 2013. The Department for International Development (DFID) joined as a co-funder of the Energy Catalyst in 2016.

DFID and EPSRC are funding this competition with a budget of up to £9 million. DFID’s funding will support innovation that is relevant to the needs of developing countries. In particular, this will help transform energy access for communities in sub-Saharan countries.

1 person has had something to say so far

Thanks for the information.

We are always looking for new collaboration in R&D projects and we are really interested in taking part this Round!

We are participating in 10 funded European Projects (FP7 and H2020) plus some others in national funding projects. So far this year, we have submitted 4 project as coordinators (Low Carbon Energy and Circular Economy) and around 10 (Biobased Industry, Sustainable Process Industry through Resource and Energy Efficiency…) as participants so far, which are in evaluation.

Our primary topics of interest are: Resource and Energy Efficiency in the Industry, Biofuels & Bioproducts and Circular Economy.

From our side, our strong role in tasks are from the Conceptual Design to the Front-End Engineering Design:

• Design and modelling by means of chemical and biochemical process software along with the mathematical modelling support: simulation of processes (chemicals, energy, bioproducts, biofuels, etc) at pilot plant scale and at industrial up-scaling.
• Exergy analysis to evaluate the real efficiency of energy-intensive industrial processes and entire plants.
• Design of reactors and thermal, solvent-based extraction, distillations modules…
• Techno-economic assessment for a real industrial scale to ensure the profitability of the processes developed.
• Risk assessment, Exploitation and Dissemination activities.
