1060 Research span out of HP Labs in 2002 to commercialise a research project. The project evolved into NetKernel, an enterprise application server which models systems with information resources (like the web does) rather than code. This approach has a number of advantages over traditional enterprise software approaches but we are realising that it is it’s ability to cache computation that can massively reduce energy consumption in many systems either by allowing the systems to idle more often or to simply reduce the number of boxes or cores needed to achieve required performance metrics. We currently have a mature core product but there is much work to do both in terms of approach to market and technology to show this from the perspective of energy savings. Introducing a radical new technology even with seemingly obvious benefits has proved hard. So finding a collaboration where the funding can reduce the perceived risk and round out our experience and refine the product to address this market sounds pretty much like the brief of “scaling up energy efficient computing.”Download (698.2k) Get URL.
