Algal Roadmap Report Launch and SPARK Awards

The Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group (ESKTN, Bioscience KTN and EGSKTN) will be launching NERC/TSB/BBSRC Algal funded SPARK Awards on the 3rd June at an event due to take place at Ironmorger's Hall in London.

The SPARK Awards are £5000 grants to encourage new collaborations between the research community and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The grant is paid to the research partner to tackle a problem relevant to the SME. There will be 6 awards available. It is the intention that small confidence building measures such as a SPARK award will encourage a longer term relationship between the SME and research-based partner.

What is covered?

All projects must contain a significant element of algal science but 3 of the awards must have an environmental angle, however; the collaboration support by a SPARK Award can comprise almost any defined piece of research work, for example:

  • feasibility studies
  • literature reviews
  • student projects
  • data analysis
  • technical consultancy
  • market research

This is an afternoon event which will also see the launch of a UK Algal Industry Roadmap. Confirmed Speakers: Prof Mike Cowling The Crown Estate; Dr Beatrix Schlarb-Ridley Adapt; Andrew Spicer Algenuity; Charlie Bavington Glycomar; Criag Rose Seaweed Health Foundation ; Bert Groenendaal Sioen; Fiona Houston Mara.
