KTN is launching a series of regional events at which selected designers, inventors, entrepreneurs and manufacturers can obtain confidential expert feedback and guidance on developing/commercialising their dementia-friendly product ideas.

About the Innovation Panel
850,000 people live with dementia in the UK, at a cost to the economy of £24 billion. This is forecast to rise to 1 million (£32.5 bn) by 2015 and 2 million (£59.4 bn) by 2051. Source: Alzheimer’s Society.
Despite this growing incidence and cost relatively few products or environments consider the needs and aspirations of people living with dementia and their carers.
KTN is therefore launching an initiative to stimulate the market for everyday products which are inclusive of people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The programme is inspired by the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia 2020 and Innovate UK’s Long Term Care Revolution Challenge. It also builds on the Design Council 2012 Dementia Challenge and complements BSI’s Design for Mind initiative.
KTN is the UK’s innovation network, established by Innovate UK to build better links between science, creativity and business across the economy - from energy and transport to healthcare and robotics.
KTN Innovation Panels will provide product inventors and developers with expert feedback at half-day events around the UK. Depending on location and theme, panellists may include:
• People living with dementia and carers
• Dementia researchers & charitable organisations
• Commercialisation and access to finance experts
• Buyers and merchandisers
• Materials scientists & other technologists
• New product developers & designers
Panellists for the pilot event on 30 March 2016 include representatives of Alzheimer’s Society, Arup, Red & Yellow Care, Imagination Factory and Northumbria University.
KTN invites applications from developers of all products and technologies, which improve quality of life for people living with dementia, especially in the early stages when they may still be active in the community. Potential themes include:
• Healthcare & medication
• Hygiene & nourishment
Enjoyment & Well-Being
• Leisure & entertainment
• The workplace
• Innovation Panel meetings will comprise 30-45 minute individual presentations and a Q&A session with panellists.
• At some events this may be followed by a group discussion on generic issues associated with dementia-friendly product development and commercialisation.
• The Panel is unable to provide direct funding but may be able to assist with finance sources and applications.
• Where appropriate, KTN and/or its partners may offer further in-depth guidance and support.
Individual panel sessions will be treated as confidential, but KTN and / or its partners may disseminate generic lessons. KTN may also invite selected applicants to be interviewed for articles and case studies in order to share best practice and build an evidence base.
• Applications must be submitted online prior to shortlisting by KTN.
• Selected applicants will be invited to attend the next available panel meeting.
• Applicants who are trading or close to market will be prioritised, though early stage or research proposal projects are also welcomed.
• KTN reserves the right to make a charge to selected applicants in order to cover the organisational costs of panel meetings and/or follow-up support. This will not apply to the pilot event on 30 March 2016.
