KTN's online platform helps you to make the connections you need

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from Digital Creative to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.

The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Knowledge Transfer Network is Innovate UK's innovation network partner, and also works with other funders to provide innovation networking services and fulfil our mission to drive UK growth.

We link new ideas and opportunities with expertise, markets and finance through our network of businesses, universities, funders and investors. From agri-food to autonomous systems and from energy to design, KTN combines expertise in all sectors with the ability to cross boundaries. Connecting with KTN can lead to potential partners, horizon-expanding events and innovation insights relevant to your needs.

Connecting Digital Start Ups, Berlin – feedback and follow-up

Our recent 'Connecting UK and German Digital Start Ups' event in Berlin, (in partnership with UKTI, SIN and Berlin Brandenburg Medianet), was a huge success both for organisers and participants.

Video coverage of the day gives a sense of the camaraderie of the event, emphasising the way in which, as Andrea Peters from Berlin Brandenburg Medianet states, "people really get good business contacts - and maybe they get friends too".  Mark Leaver, who co-organised the event, said, "What's been the most exciting is every time we walk out of the room everybody rushes together and starts talking furiously, finding lots of connections."

We've also been checking in with some of the UK companies who attended, to get their insight on what they learned and the follow up from connections made.

'This trip provided me with great insight into the German creative technology market. I was surprised to see the similarities not only between the markets but also the cultures. There was a good balance of speakers at the event from Venture Capitalists to Entrepreneurs and this created a lively debate about the challenges from both sides. It was clear that the UK and Germany have similar issues when it comes to raising capital and developing new businesses.'

Mark Mason, CEO of Mubaloo

'The ‘Connecting Digital Start-Ups Between the UK and Germany’ event in Berlin was enjoyable, informative, stimulating and productive. With a GDP of $3.3 trillion (£2 trillion) Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, a change from the downbeat news about everyone else’s economy. It also brought home to me that Berlin is very close - so business can take place without jet lag.'
Elspeth Penny, Founder and Director of 2BU

"During the course of 1to1 meetings I discovered not only new potential partners and backers but also connections with existing Berlin partners.  People pitched ideas, their company, themselves and sought connections, which I definitely found.  The day was full of information, cross-cultural insights and a common purpose – to find ways to make things happen, and create new businesses."
Phil Parker, Founder of NYAC

"The matchmaking was really good, both over lunch and later on. [The main insight was] that in running a start-up you CAN think globally, IF you have the networks in place in the markets you are targeting."
Julian McCrea, Managing Director of Portal Entertainment

For CIKTN the key outcome is that these businesses then use the knowledge gained and connections made to actively drive new revenues. The feedback so far is positive:

"Coming home with a stack of business cards is easy; continuing the conversation the next day is the true sign of a successful ‘networking event.’ Sure enough my outbox was full the following morning, as was my inbox; it continues to surprise me how selfless the startup-community is and UK-German relations were no different."
Chris Roebuck, Co-founder / Developer at Quillu

"It was a great opportunity to network, learn and understand how to extend my business into the German marketplace."  - Mark Mason

"As a consequence of this trip, a week later I've already had one good meeting, have another couple set up and still some more leads to follow up." - Elspeth Penny

Given the positive response to the Berlin event, both in the UK and in Germany, we are currently scoping some potential follow on activities. We’d be interested to get your thoughts or opinions on other European digital hotspots which would be of interest for a similar targeted trade event - generating market insight and creating commercial connections.
