KTN's online platform helps you to make the connections you need

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) has refreshed its online platform to intelligently connect you to relevant events, funding, thought pieces and specialist staff to help your business innovate and grow.

You can discover content using your area of interest, from Digital Creative to transport; from space to health – all major UK economic sectors are covered. Once you have selected your interests, using our intelligent tagging system, we will then display rich and relevant content related to your area, often from surprising sources.

An example might be new satellite technology from the space sector that is applicable in the agri-food sector. KTN-UK.co.uk will help you form these unusual and valuable connections.

All content on the platform has been carefully curated by our team of innovation specialists – not by an automated algorithm – so you can be confident that KTN is connecting you to the most relevant cutting-edge information.

The move also marks a closer alignment with our main funder, Innovate UK , with the website branding making a clear visual link. Knowledge Transfer Network is Innovate UK's innovation network partner, and also works with other funders to provide innovation networking services and fulfil our mission to drive UK growth.

We link new ideas and opportunities with expertise, markets and finance through our network of businesses, universities, funders and investors. From agri-food to autonomous systems and from energy to design, KTN combines expertise in all sectors with the ability to cross boundaries. Connecting with KTN can lead to potential partners, horizon-expanding events and innovation insights relevant to your needs.

Digital Transport Speed Networking Event

The Knowledge Transfer Network is hosting an exclusive event that will bring industry leaders together with high-growth potential entrepreneurs offering innovative digital solutions that use data to transform the transport industry.

This ‘Digital meets Transport' networking session will open doors to larger brands that are looking to the digital community to implement agile innovation. The session will showcase companies developing disruptive data capture technologies, innovative data-driven applications, artificial intelligence algorithms, cyber-security solutions and open-source payment systems.

The event will take place from 14:00-17:00 on Thursday 8th December at the Digital Engineering Test Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. Up to 16 of the most innovative companies to apply to attend will be invited to meet with established industry brands, for an afternoon of facilitated networking.

Confirmed participants currently include:

Nissan: The global automotive business and world-class manufacturer are looking for innovative solutions to gain improvements in cost, quality & delivery performance in a very lean, high volume manufacturing environment. The aim is to make use of big data in Nissan’s management cycle for daily decisions and mid-term strategic planning. Nissan are looking for solutions that can be integrated within their existing systems and designed to suit their needs. Nissan are particularly interested in innovative automated solutions that use artificial intelligence, self-learning algorithms or pattern matching techniques and expect the interfaces to be web, cloud and mobile based.

Transport for London:  Transport for London is the owner and operator of Europe's largest integrated transport network. They are seeking digital solutions that could calculate in real time the number of passengers on a vehicle, and to make that information available on-board and on external information systems. They are also interested in the opportunity to use buses as probes in order to sense the interior and exterior environment of the bus to ascertain the levels of pollution, road condition and passenger comfort (e.g. temperature, humidity, noise vibration). Preferred solutions would take advantage of ‘opportunistic offloading’ of data and be self-powered and independent of other systems.

Rolls-Royce: Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc. is the world’s second-largest maker of aircraft engines, and is also one of the largest defence contractors. Rolls-Royce are interested in solutions that both enable data transfer effectively in limited bandwidth locations and that ensures that classified data is protected through transit. Solutions in the areas of the deployed pre-processing of data, encryption, secure transmission and secure storage are welcomed. Rolls-Royce would like to be in a position to offer insight and feedback to military operators within the same timeframe as civil operators.

Network Rail: Network Rail is the organisation that is responsible for the physical infrastructure of the UK rail network. This covers such aspects as tracks, signalling, scheduling, bridges and tunnels, level crossings, electrification, and some stations.  Of interest are innovations that will deliver value to Network Rail in maintaining and running the rail network such as increased utilisation of track, better knowledge and management of disruptions, and interfaces between different supplier - ahead of eventual implementation of open data standards.  Creative collection and use of data and algorithms, with an application in cyber security are also of interest.

Amey: Amey employs thousands of people who work on in hazardous and dangerous conditions across our many transport related accounts in rail, highways, utilities & environmental services. Some of the challenges faced by the businesses is to track the movement of the onsite staff especially working in and around ‘no go’ zones or dangerous zone as well as improve risk and contextual awareness around the locations where they are working. There is a belief (and evidence) that digital technologies, if properly implemented within robust processes, will reduce the number of close calls and accidents and improve the overall safety of our employees.

Transport for Greater Manchester/ Transport for West Midlands/ Travel Spirit: TfGM, TfWM and the Travel Spirit Foundation believe in the opportunity for a change to the way Demand Responsive Transport is delivered. They are seeking investible business models that are built around developing open source payment management software (e.g.: dispatch software integration, third-party billing, user and service eligibility conditions, and handling split payments and fare subsidies). They are also interested in new modelling algorithms that can forecast the take-up of open-sourced booking API's in a Mobility as a Service market place.

The full version of the corporation’s challenges can be found here.

Event format

The event format has been designed to connect entrepreneurs with potential clients and collaborators through a series of rapid ‘speed dating' style sessions, which may lead on to successful commercial relationships. Digital innovator attendees will rotate around the room with strictly five minutes within which to have a one-to-one conversation or pitch to each industry representative. There will be refreshments throughout the afternoon.
