The Algal Bioenergy Special Interest Group (ABSIG) is organising a free one-day workshop on Algae as a Tool in Ecosystem Services: Microalgae to Aviation Biofuels on 24th November 2015 at Birmingham Airport.


Opportunities for microalgae in aviation biofuels

The objective of this workshop is to bring together key stakeholders - from microalgae cultivators to fuel suppliers - to discuss the barriers and opportunities for this technology in the UK, and to begin to develop strategies to ensure microalgae based aviation fuel is a shorter-term reality.

Call for abstracts

Submission deadline: Friday 9th October 2015

There are a limited number of five minute ‘pitch’ slots in the programme and we are seeking abstracts for consideration in the following areas:

  • Microalgae culture (optimal strains for aviation fuel; growing microalgae at a cost-effective scale; optimal models for enhanced growth; an ecosystem services approach to growth optimisation);
  • Microalgae to aviation fuel: conversion technologies;
  • Creating a jet-friendly ‘drop-in’ fuel;
  • From molecule to application: infrastructure considerations;
  • New fuels and engine design considerations
