Lipid factories: Modifying algae for enhanced productivity

The Algal Bioenergy Special interest Group has published a case study on the development of genetic tools to create strains of Chlorella with optimal and commercially desired lipid profiles.

Microalgae are a rich source of commercially important molecules and play a key role in ecosystem services. In this project, micro algae are engineered to enhance the production of commercially important lipids with applications in the food, personal care and fuel sectors but critically diverting our reliance on unsustainable palm oil.
