Extreme Algae Blooms

Every picture tells a story- National Geographic have highlighted in a recent article and through a series of pictures (link) the increase in what they describe as extreme algal blooms. The link is made between the expanding human population and the increased use of fertilisers to help meet the demands for food. This then leads to excess nutrients making their way into our water sytems and subsequent algal blooms which can even be seen from space. The pictures and articles range from Qingdao in China in 2011 to Lake Erie in the US.
