Ecover trials synthetically modified algal oils as alternative to palm oils

Ecover has announced its intention trial algal oils derived from synthetically modified organisms in its products.

In a statement on their website they say “The term synthetic biology covers a wide spectrum, and we realise that more extreme uses of this technology exist.  Our focus however, is specifically on technology which embraces the natural functions of organisms and which has a proven and significant environmental benefit to offer our planet.”

Ecover are interested in algal oils because they have lower environmental footprint than petroleum base oils and palm oils.
