Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 Algal SPARK Awards

We are pleased to announce the winners of the summer 2014 Algal SPARK Awards competition:

  • Biogas, hydrogen and energy potential of microalgae grown in nutrient rich wastewater - Industrial Phycology and Cranfield University

  • Measurement of the biomethane potential of algal biomass for power generation - Anaero Technology and University of Cambridge

  • Algal bioremediation of wastewater from Jade Perch growth system (Jade Algae) - GJL & AM Western and Scottish Association for Marine Science

  • Shipboard photobioreactor for nutrient cycling, biomass production and pollutant sequestration - Octoply Ltd and University College London

  • Sustainable and optimal EPA production of a commercial microalgal strain - AlgaeCytes Ltd and The Marine Biological Association

SPARK Awards are £5k grants to encourage new collaborations between the research community and Small & Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). It is the intention that small confidence building measures such as a SPARK award will encourage a longer term relationship between the SME and research-based partner. The 2014 for 6 NERC-funded ABSIG SPARK Awards targeted projects in the area of Algal Biotechnology and Bioenergy and focus on Ecosystem Services

You can also read summary reports from completed 2013 SPARK projects on our Algal SPARK Awards page.
