Algal Industry Roadmap Launch and Algal SPARK Awards

We are pleased to confirm the following speakers at the Roadmap Launch event on the 3rd June. Prof Mike Cowling, the Chief Scientific Officer of The Crown Estate will give a brief introduction to the Roadmap followed by a more in-depth analysis by the roadmap authors Dr Beatrix Schlarb-Ridley and Dr Brenda Parker from Adapt.

The programme also includes talks from a range of different companies involved in algal industries including Charlie Bavington from Glycomar, Fiona Huston from Mara, Andrew Spicer of Algenuity and Bert Groenedaal from the Belgium textile company Sioen.

The event will also see the launch of the first NERC/TSB/BBSRC Algal funded SPARK Awards these are £5000 grants to encourage new collaborations between the research community and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The grant is paid to the research partner to tackle a problem relevant to the SME. There will be 6 awards available.

It is the intention that small confidence building measures such as a SPARK award will encourage a longer term relationship between the SME and research-based partner.

What is covered?

All projects must contain a significant element of algal science but 3 of the awards must have an environmental angle, however; the collaboration support by a SPARK Award can comprise almost any defined piece of research work, for example:

·      feasibility studies

·      literature reviews

·      student projects

·      data analysis

·      technical consultancy

·      market research

The event will take place on the 3rd June at the Ironmorger's Hall in London and is free to attend. If you wish to register for the event please follow this  link
