Towards the rational exploitation and conservation of algal genetic resources

 

Are you involved in seaweed farming? Are you interested in the genetic improvement of seaweed crops? Do you wonder how to harness the biotechnological potential of natural seaweed diversity whilst preserving genetic resources for future generations? Do you feel daunted by the rapid technological evolution in population genetics? If so, this course is for you.

 

The first in a series of workshops to be run by the GlobalSeaweed network, this course will explore the genetic, conservation and policy challenges posed by rapid seaweed domestication. It will blend lectures by experts, interactive round tables, field and laboratory sessions. Quite uniquely, the course will be immediately followed by the 1st European Seaweed Production and Marketability workshop on May 13-14th, which will provide you with opportunities to network with key seaweed cultivation stakeholders (please register for this free event separately at www.europeanseaweed.eventbrite.com).

 

What you’ll learn on this course:

 

Day 1 : Recording and preserving algal genetic diversity   anticipating the biological footprint of seaweed cultivation:

Main speakers: Prof. Juliet Brodie, Dr. Claire Gachon.

 

    Rationale: Impact of cultivation on domesticated species and wild stocks (speaker tbc)

    Algal Repositories: Herbaria & Culture Collections

    Molecular characterisation: markers for species delimitation, molecular phylogeny

    Seaweed monitoring in the 21st century (distribution, abundance, changes)

    Risks to biodiversity incurred by cultivation and domestication (biological invasions, diseases, biodiversity loss)

    A short excursion to the seashore, to collect and identify local seaweeds

    Round table: Policy and operational recommendations to tackle seaweed recording and conservation

    Networking dinner (included in registration fee)

-       Day 2: Unravelling, exploiting and conserving intraspecific diversity for domestication

-       Main speakers: Dr. Myriam Valero, Dr Yacine Badis

-        

-           Genetic bottlenecks during domestication, importance of basic knowledge on life history traits and local adaptation prior to breeding): the story of Gracilaria chilensis

-           Linking Genetic Markers to Industrially relevant traits: an introduction to QTLs & marker-assisted selection

-           Demonstration of laboratory algal and pathogen cultivation techniques, including a question and answer session in our laboratory facilities for observation / conservation / cultivation of your seaweed material in the presence of several expert tutors

-           Conclusion & final wrap-up: Policy and operational recommendations to rationalise domestication and achieve sustainability

-       This course will be led by Drs Claire Gachon and Yacine Badis, who specialise in algal diseases, genetics and genomics, with the support of leading international experts. It has been designed for postgraduate, early career researchers and practitioners interested in the burgeoning European seaweed industry.

This includes all course materials and a networking dinner on the evening of Day one. Lunch can be brought with you, or purchased in our on-site café and you may want to arrange overnight accommodation in Oban if required. (This is not included in the course fee.)

-       Instructors:

-       Dr Claire Gachon is interested in all aspects of algal host-pathogen interactions. Her current research delves into the Genomics of Marine Algae and their Pathogens and she recently published a joint paper questioning whether brown algae might be capable of adaptive immunity. Claire has recently been invited to speak in Korea, Japan and Bordeaux. She sits on the Steering committee of NERC’s National Biomolecular Analysis Facility and is also an Evaluator for Marie Curie Actions.

-       Professor Juliet Brodie is a Phycologist with a special interest in the taxonomy and ecology of red algae. She performs research in the Department of Life Science at London Natural History Museum.

-       Dr. Myriam Valero holds a position at the Roscoff Biological Station and is interested in many topics of seaweed domestication. She performed research on seaweed population genetics and effect of mating system, connectivity, reduced size population on the evolution of species.

-       Dr Yacine Badis is interested in plant and algal host-pathogen interactions. He performs research at SAMS on crops and algal quantitative genetics of resistance to oomycete pathogens, and molecular characterization of resistance genes.
